An Unyielding Stance
The man thrust his index finger forward, pointing directly into the woman’s face. His brow pressed down into a deep crease as his voice rose across the private study.
“The estate splits three ways,” he insisted, leaning his upper body over her chair. “Equally. That was always the plan, and nothing changes that.”
The woman sitting opposite him did not flinch. She kept her hands clasped lightly over her dark skirt, her chin raised while she met his glare.
Behind them, towering dark wood shelves lined the walls, filled row after row with leather-bound volumes. The man paced half a step back, gesturing sharply toward the floorboards between them to reinforce his claim.
A Quiet Intervention
Across the room, an older woman with cropped silver hair turned away from the confrontation. Dressed in a tailored gray suit, she walked calmly along the wall of books.
Her fingers trailed lightly across the worn spines, counting rows until her hand came to a rest on a single weathered leather volume. She gripped the upper edge and tilted it downward off the shelf.
Tucked neatly between the yellowed pages lay an off-white, folded sheet of paper. She pulled the document free and turned back toward the center of the room.
“Before we continue,” she spoke clearly, holding the folded document in both hands, “I think you should both see what your father left inside this book.”
She stepped across the Persian rug and extended the paper directly into the man’s line of sight.
The Paper Unfolds
The man snatched the paper from her fingertips. His sharp posture slackened slightly as he pulled the folded edges apart.
His eyes darted across the header, tracing down through the typed legal paragraphs and formal seals stamped onto the surface. His mouth fell slightly open, the tight line of his lips slackening.
“This is dated after the first will,” he said, his voice dropping several registers. His eyes stayed glued to the bottom paragraph.
He slowly raised the page higher, gripping the edges so hard the paper curved between his thumbs. His forehead smoothed out as color drained from his cheeks.
“He changed everything,” the man muttered, shaking his head faintly. “And he left the house to her alone.”
A Final Confirmation
The seated woman remained upright in her chair, her shoulders squared against the polished wood of the armchair. She watched his reaction without leaning forward or uttering a word.
The silver-haired woman folded her hands over the open book, watching the man absorb each word on the legal parchment. The man lowered his arms slowly, the document trembling slightly between his fingers.
The paper settled flat against his jacket, showing the typed signature line and dark blue stamp affixed to the bottom corner.
