A Commotion On The Sidewalk
The pharmacist gripped the young boy by his forearms outside the storefront door, prying his fingers away from a white plastic pill bottle. Tears spilled down his cheeks as he clutched the bottle to his chest.
A man wearing a brown kitchen apron stepped through the doorway of the adjoining diner. He reached into his pocket, pulled out folded paper currency, and handed it directly to the woman.
The pharmacist took the cash, let go of the boy’s jacket, and walked back behind her counter. The man led the boy inside his dining room, set a warm paper parcel into his hands alongside the medicine, and sent him out the front door.
The Sudden Fall
Decades passed behind that same wooden service counter. The man wiped grease from a white plate, carefully placing garnished meat and sliced carrots in neat rows.
His fingers went rigid against the stainless steel countertop. His breathing turned shallow, his shoulders slumped forward, and his knees buckled against the tiled kitchen floor.
The plate shattered against the tile, scattering warm food and white shards across the ground. His daughter dropped to her knees, shaking his shoulder while pressing her ear to his chest.
An Impossible Balance
Fluorescent bulbs flickered in the sterile hospital corridor as a doctor approached with a medical clipboard tucked under his arm. His face remained flat as he explained the urgent necessity of complex surgical care.
The daughter clutched the edge of her cardigan, asking about the total expense of the procedure. The physician lowered his gaze and confirmed the balance would reach staggering numbers.
Days later, she sat on a wooden visitor’s chair beside her father’s hospital bed. A nurse walked into the room and passed a thick manila folder into her hands.
Her hands trembled as she pulled back the folder’s cover. Her thumb traced a printed line near the bottom of the ledger showing a remaining balance of zero.
The Receipt On The Bedside Tray
The attending surgeon pushed the door open and stepped up to the edge of the adjustable mattress. He leaned down, placing a weathered slip of paper across the bedside meal tray.
The older man adjusted his glasses, reading the faded script from decades earlier. The doctor extended his hand, wrapping his palm around the patient’s fingers.
Down the street, the daughter lifted her arms and took down the printed ‘Business For Sale’ sign hanging from the glass restaurant window. Inside, the doctor pulled out a wooden chair opposite the older man and settled into the booth.
