Caught In The Mesh
The small donkey kicked its hind hooves against the dirt, tangled across the plastic netting along the orchard edge.
Its chest pressed hard against the colorful mesh barrier. Each attempt to pull forward tightened the grid around its belly and hind legs.
A few yards up the dirt track, an adult donkey paced near the parked pickup. She lifted her head toward the trees and let out a sharp, raspy bray, watching every small thrash from the lane.
Heavy boot steps sounded over the dry soil. A man wearing a ball cap and work jacket walked briskly past the truck bed, carrying a pair of handheld bypass shears.
Working The Shears
He dropped to one knee in the powdery brown dirt beside the trapped foal. His left hand, covered in a black work glove, rested flat on the animal’s flank.
The foal went rigid under his palm. Its long ears pinned back slightly, dark eyes darting toward the ground while the man leaned close to inspect the tangle.
A thick white tension cord was pulled taut right beneath the animal’s lower belly. The woven plastic grid had bunched into a tight collar around the hind leg joints.
The man slid the lower jaw of the metal shears beneath the tightest white strand. He gripped the handles with both hands to keep the sharp edges away from bare skin.
With a firm squeeze, the metal blades sheared through the cord with a dull snap. The tension released immediately, but the colorful mesh still held the small limbs pinned to the dirt line.
He repositioned the tool and snipped through two more connecting strands of the netting. The lower band finally parted, opening a wide gap across the dirt furrow.
The Dash To The Lane
As the final strand parted, the foal lunged upward on its front hooves. It kicked backward against the loose mesh, sending a small cloud of dust billowing into the late sun.
“Easy,” the man murmured, keeping his gloved hand near its shoulder as the legs scrambled for solid ground. “You’re free.”
The foal stood upright on all four hooves in the middle of the path. It shook its mane once, swiveled its long ears toward the truck, and took a careful step forward.
Finding nothing pulling back on its legs, the young animal broke into an energetic trot straight down the center of the lane.
The mother donkey walked quickly toward the approaching foal. They met midway, lowering their heads to bump muzzles together in the golden backlight.
Dust rose around their hooves as both donkeys turned side-by-side, walking away between the rows of fruit trees toward the setting sun.
