An Overturned Vehicle on the Shoulder
The golden retriever pressed his front paws against the man’s flannel shirt and barked into the rush of highway traffic. Beside them, an overturned sedan rested on its crushed roof, wheels pointed toward the overcast sky.
Gravel crunched beneath the man’s boots as he attempted to sit upright against the rear bumper. His eyes stayed half-shut, his breathing shallow while the dog nudged his cheek with a wet nose.
A silver sedan pulled onto the gravel shoulder twenty yards ahead. The driver’s door swung open immediately, and a young woman stepped out onto the roadside.
A Rapid Call for Help
She crossed the rocky ground, dropping to her knees on the loose stones beside the fallen man. She kept one hand on his shoulder while resting her other palm against the dog’s chest harness.
The man tilted his head back against the dented sheet metal and whispered that it hurt. She leaned in close, keeping her voice level as she pressed her phone to her ear.
She gave the highway dispatcher the mile marker, noting exit twenty-five on the overhead sign. The dog pressed his head beneath her arm, his tail brushing against the stones as sirens echoed down the corridor.
Red and blue strobes flashed across the highway barrier as a heavy rescue rig rolled to a stop. Paramedics jumped from the cab carrying equipment bags and a yellow backboard.
Rushing Toward the Hospital Doors
A medic checked the man’s chest with a stethoscope while another unrolled IV tubing and prepped a cervical collar. They transferred him onto the gurney, fastening nylon straps across his chest and legs.
The dog followed every movement of the crew, pacing beside the metal wheels as they pushed the gurney up the rear ramp. Once the ambulance doors latched shut, the woman guided the retriever into the front seat of her own car.
She buckled the seatbelt through the dog’s harness and followed the emergency lights into the city. The retriever sat upright, staring forward through the windshield with his paws flat on the seat fabric.
At the emergency trauma bay, hospital doors slid wide as staff wheeled the gurney down the hallway. The dog trotted alongside the gurney wheels, keeping pace until sliding glass doors separated them at the critical care unit.
Reunion in the Recovery Room
Outside the glass partition, the woman knelt on the linoleum floor with her arm around the retriever’s shoulders. Inside the room, monitors displayed steady green wave patterns beside the hospital bed.
Days later, the monitor leads were removed as the man sat upright against white pillows. The retriever stood on his hind legs, resting his chin on the blue hospital blanket while the man ran his fingers through the dog’s fur.
A food tray arrived, and the dog ate from a metal bowl on the floor while the man took slow bites of his lunch, nodding and smiling toward the visitor.
Back home in the living room, the man sat in his armchair as the woman paused at the open front door to wave goodbye. Later that evening in the bedroom, soft lamp light fell across the quilt where the golden retriever lay curled asleep against the man’s chest.
