Woman Riding Along Lake Is Cornered by Persistent Mother Swan

  • 3 min read

An Unexpected Obstacle on the Path

A white swan charged forward on webbed feet, spreading its massive wings wide across the paved lakeside trail to block an oncoming bicycle.

The cyclist squeezed her brakes, planting both sneakers onto the asphalt as the large bird hissed and snapped its orange beak toward the front tire.

She shifted her bike slightly to steer around the bird, but the swan lunged forward again, matching her every move and refusing to let her pass.

The bird darted closer, reached out with its neck, and clamped its beak directly onto the hem of the woman’s peach shirt, tugging her backward.

A Persistent Guide Leading Off the Trail

Startled, the cyclist dismounted, set her kickstand into the grass, and watched the swan turn toward a grassy slope beside the water.

The bird took several awkward steps forward, looked over its shoulder, and waited for her to follow.

Every time she slowed her pace, the swan turned back, arching its neck and pacing along the edge of the lake.

The bird walked directly to a patch of overgrown weeds near a wooden park bench and stopped at the rim of a deep dirt pit.

The swan stood over the dark opening, pointing its beak downward toward the shadowed earth below.

The Discovery in the Dirt Pit

The woman approached slowly, dropped to her knees on the turf, and peered over the rim of the narrow hole.

Curled at the bottom of the excavation, several feet below ground level, was a tiny, gray cygnet struggling to gain traction on the loose soil.

The little bird flapped its miniature gray wings against the dirt walls, sliding backward with every attempt to climb out.

The adult swan paced tightly around the perimeter of the hole, keeping its eyes fixed on the trapped chick.

The woman leaned over the edge, stretching both arms down into the dark cavity while bracing her knees against the grassy bank.

A Delicate Retrieval by the Water

Her fingers reached the bottom of the pit, carefully sliding under the chick’s tiny body and cupping its fluffy gray chest.

She lifted the chick upward through the narrow opening, keeping her grip firm and steady as loose dirt crumbled down around her palms.

She pulled the cygnet over the rim, kneeling back on her heels as the adult bird immediately stepped in closer.

The woman placed the baby onto the green grass directly in front of the parent bird.

The mother swan lowered its neck, nudging the chick’s head with the tip of its orange beak as the baby chirped and stood on the lawn beside the resting bicycle while the sun dipped toward the horizon.
