Trapped Against The Concrete
Tiny claws scraped rapidly against the rough grey concrete, searching for a grip that was not there.
A tiny baby raccoon stood upright on its hind legs along the narrow shoulder of a busy highway. Inches from its back, cars rushed past in a continuous blur of speed and noise.
Above the kit, perched on top of the central jersey barrier, an adult raccoon peered straight down. Her dark mask turned side to side as she tracked the moving traffic before leaning forward over the lip.
Reaching Across The Drop
The mother extended her front paws downward, extending her torso over the edge of the barrier.
She lowered her chest flat against the flat top of the wall to counterbalance her weight. Her hind legs anchored into the weathered surface behind her.
Below, the kit stretched both arms upward as high as its small frame allowed. Its black-tipped paws reached toward the mother’s descending limbs, but a gap remained between them.
The mother shifted forward another inch, tilting her snout toward the roadway. She lowered her left forearm, offering her wrist directly to the kit’s reaching claws.
Lifting To Safety
The kit locked its paws onto her wrist. In response, the mother clamped her grip onto the young animal’s front legs and pulled upward.
She shifted her weight backward, muscles tightening along her shoulders. With a steady pull, she hauled the kit off the asphalt.
The baby dangled momentarily over the highway shoulder before the mother grabbed it by the scruff and hoisted it onto the flat top of the barrier.
She kept one paw firmly planted on the kit’s back, holding it motionless against the concrete while two cars passed on the adjacent lane.
Crossing Into The Woods
Once the nearest lane cleared, the adult raccoon turned toward the far shoulder. She lowered herself to the opposite roadway first, guiding the kit down beside her.
The kit stayed directly behind her tail, matching her quick, low gait across the lanes of pavement.
Both animals cleared the shoulder together and disappeared under the yellow foliage at the edge of the forest.
