An Unexpected Encounter on the Bus
A young teenager stands up in a crowded city bus and gestures toward his empty seat.
The older man beside him grips the yellow handrail, his knuckles pale against the metal. He leans his body forward, taking a cautious step into the aisle while nodding quietly. As the man settles into the blue fabric seat, the teenager leans down and speaks a name into the quiet bus cabin.
The teenager says the name Daniel Carter clearly. The old man pauses, his head turning slowly toward the boy. He asks if the boy knows Daniel, his voice gravelly and low. The boy stays close, his backpack slipping slightly off one shoulder as he waits for an answer.
Uncovering the Lost Photograph
The old man reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a worn brown leather wallet. His fingers slide through the interior slots until he grips the edges of a yellowed black-and-white photograph. He holds the picture out into the light streaming through the rain-spotted bus window.
The image shows two young men standing shoulder to shoulder, one dressed in a dark civilian jacket and the other wearing a military uniform. The teenager reaches out, his fingers brushing the paper as his eyes widen. He points directly at the soldier in the photo and says that the man is his grandfather.
The old man looks at the boy, explaining that the soldier was his closest friend many years ago. He explains that he had not seen him since the day he vanished from the city streets. The teenager turns the photo over, studying every line on the worn portrait while the bus sways along the wet pavement.
Arriving at the Forgotten Gates
The teenager sits on the seat behind the old man, holding a small printout in his hands. He asks where they are heading, his voice rising above the hum of the engine. The old man stares out at the rain-streaked glass, stating that they are traveling toward his former home after decades of searching.
Up in the driver’s seat, the bus driver glides the vehicle along the curve of the road. He speaks into his rearview mirror, announcing that the bus is entering the old Riverside neighborhood. He slows the bus down near a curb bordered by tall residential trees and cuts the engine.
The driver steps down from the folded doors first, stepping directly onto the wet sidewalk. The teenager follows close behind him, pulling his blue hoodie tighter around his shoulders as they walk down an overgrown street together. They stop directly in front of a tall wrought-iron fence surrounding an old house.
A Kept Promise Revealed
The driver reaches out and places his hand against the latch of the gate. A rusted metal plaque attached to the iron bars reads the name Carter in faint cursive script. The driver turns to the teenager with a raised brow, asking if his grandfather truly lived inside the property.
The driver unlatches the gate, pushing the metal back as it grates against the concrete path. They walk up the cracked walkway toward the front porch where the elderly man waits near the heavy wooden doors. The elderly man reaches into his coat once more and brings out a folded, aged document with hand-written script across the surface.
He unfolds the paper carefully, handing it over to the young boy. The teenager takes the letter with both hands, his eyes moving across the lines of ink as rain falls lightly around them. The old man explains that his friend did not leave the house behind, but left it under his care until a member of his family returned. The three men stand together on the wooden porch under the falling rain as the old man, the driver, and the boy face each other in front of the open doorway.
