Mother Fox Refuses To Leave As Officer Approaches Trapped Kit

  • 3 min read

A Sudden Stop Along The Median

A mother fox paced back and forth against the dirty concrete barrier, pawing at a tiny drainage scupper where a small head poked through.

Traffic ground to a crawl across all lanes as drivers tapped their brakes, hazard lights flashing in the afternoon glare.

Inside the cramped opening, a young fox kit wriggled its shoulders, unable to squeeze its body forward onto the roadway.

The adult fox nudged the kit’s snout with her own, whimpering softly while her bushy tail twitched near the white fog line.

A highway patrol officer jogged up along the shoulder, his bright yellow reflective vest catching the sunlight as he closed the distance.

Closing The Distance On Foot

The officer slowed his pace to a steady walk, lowering his shoulders so he would not appear towering against the concrete wall.

The mother fox snapped her jaws in the air, her ears pinned flat against her skull as she stepped directly between the officer’s boots and the hole.

Cars sat idling just feet away, exhaust humming against the highway divider while dozens of drivers watched through their windshields.

The officer dropped to both knees directly on the gritty pavement, bringing himself down to eye level with the wild animals.

He placed his palms flat against the cold asphalt, keeping his hands still and low while the adult fox circled his knees.

The kit let out a sharp, raspy bark from inside the concrete, thrashing its hind legs in an effort to back out.

Reaching Into The Gap

The mother fox opened her mouth wide, baring her small white teeth in a defensive display inches from the officer’s chest.

The officer did not pull back; instead, he slowly extended his bare right hand past her muzzle, angling his fingers toward the dark opening.

The mother sniffed the back of his hand, her nose flaring as she paused her low growl.

With a calm, measured reach, the officer slid his palm under the kit’s chest and gently cupped the small body.

He felt the kit’s ribcage expand against his fingers as he guided its rear legs out of the narrow concrete groove.

In one smooth motion, he drew the young fox completely free into the open air and set its paws onto the ground.

A Dash For The Treeline

The moment the kit touched the pavement, the mother fox stepped forward and opened her jaws.

She clamped her teeth gently around the loose scruff of the kit’s neck, lifting the dangling pup clear off the road surface.

She spun around in a tight arc, her ears pointed upright toward the opposite shoulder where dense green woods bordered the asphalt.

The officer remained kneeling against the divider, both hands resting on his thighs as he watched her move.

Carried securely in her grip, the kit’s tail trailed behind as the mother trotted across the empty lanes toward the tree line.
