A Gust of Wind in the Park
An elderly man sat on a wooden park bench, thumbing through a worn stack of vintage photographs. Beside him, his retriever rested attentively, watching the surrounding greenery.
As the man shuffled through the images, one faded picture slipped from his grip. A gentle breeze caught the print and carried it across the pathway, landing faceup on the grass several yards away.
The dog stood up immediately, stepping down from the bench to approach the fallen keepsake. Lowering his snout, he nudged the grass before carefully clamping his teeth along the dry border of the cardstock.
He carried the photograph back without puncturing the edges. The dog stepped up to the bench and deposited the print neatly into his owner’s outstretched hand.
An Address from the Past
The man examined the photograph, turning it over between his thumbs. Written in faded dark ink across the blank cardstock was an address: 124 Treehouse Lane, Oak Park.
His fingers traced the handwritten cursive as he studied the location. He drew a quick breath, his shoulders lifting slightly before he slipped the photograph safely inside his jacket pocket.
Standing up from the bench, he gathered the dog’s leash. The dog stepped down onto the asphalt path, matching his owner’s steady pace toward the parking lot.
They approached a dark vintage sedan parked along the curb. The man opened the passenger door, letting his companion jump inside before sliding behind the steering wheel.
A Long Drive to Oak Park
The car rolled smoothly down quiet neighborhood streets lined with mature trees. Inside, the dog rested his chin along the window frame, taking in the breeze as the vehicle cruised past suburban yards.
The sedan eventually slowed down and pulled over along a curb on Treehouse Lane. The man switched off the ignition, stepped out, and clipped the leash back onto his dog’s collar.
They walked side by side up a concrete walkway leading toward the porch of a gray two-story house. The front door featured sidelight windows and a brass knocker, framed by small porch shrubs.
The man walked up the front steps and reached for the entry. Before he could raise his hand, the front door swung inward.
Reconnecting on the Porch
Another silver-haired man appeared in the doorway, dressed in a plaid shirt and dark vest. He paused on the threshold, eyes widening as he recognized his visitor.
He stepped outside onto the porch with both arms extended. The two men stepped together into an embrace, patting each other’s backs as the dog circled around them with a wagging tail.
Both men sat down together on the wooden bench beside the front door. The dog immediately settled at their feet, resting his paws flat against the wooden decking.
The visitor reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out another black-and-white print, handing it over to his childhood friend. The image showed two young boys standing shoulder-to-shoulder in vintage shorts and collared shirts.
Both men smiled as they tilted the photo toward the daylight, pointing out details in the small square frame while the golden dog lay quietly between their shoes.
