An Urgent Finding On The Sand
The German Shepherd lowered his snout toward the wet gray skin, sniffing the stranded dolphin lying motionless on the shoreline.
Small waves rolled up the sloping beach, barely lapping against the marine mammal’s side as the tide pulled away.
Wearing a red harness, the dog paced around the dolphin, looking out toward the ocean before turning back to nudge the creature.

Moments later, a crew of six wildlife rescuers sprinted across the sand carrying a large blue transport sling.
The dog darted forward to meet the running team, leading them directly to where the dolphin lay resting on its belly.
The responders dropped to their knees around the dolphin, carefully assessing its breathing and skin condition.
Working in synchronized motion, two rescuers gently rolled the dolphin slightly onto its side to slide the heavy-duty blue tarp beneath its body.
A woman knelt by the animal’s head, dipping a red bucket into the incoming surf and gently pouring seawater over its back and dorsal fin.
The cool water washed away the dry sand clinging to the dolphin’s skin, keeping its blowhole clear and unobstructed.
Guiding The Way Into The Waves
The team gripped the reinforced handles lining the perimeter of the blue sling, spacing themselves evenly along both sides.
The German Shepherd grabbed the leading tow strap between his jaws once again, matching the rescuers’ posture step for step.
On a count of three, the entire group lifted the sling and waded forward into the breaking white foam.
The dog walked through the surging shallow water, holding firm to the strap as the water rose to his chest.
They moved past the initial break where the water reached the rescuers’ waists, allowing the sling to submerge fully.
As buoyancy took hold, the dolphin gave a strong flick of its fluke against the canvas.
The handlers lowered the front edge of the sling, letting the swell carry the dolphin out into open water.
