A Secret In The Snow
An elderly man pressed his shovel into the thick snow outside the front door before sunrise.
Emily stood inside the entryway of her house, peering through the glass door while holding her phone up to speak through the door camera. Outside, Robert pushed the heavy blade of his shovel through the drift, ignoring the biting cold and the freezing wind.
She opened the door slightly, wrapping her jacket tight around her shoulders. She called out to ask why he was clearing her walkway at four in the morning when she could easily hire a snow removal service.
A Cold Memory
Robert stopped pushing the metal shovel and leaned his weight against the wooden handle. He looked up at her, his white beard dusted with small white flakes.
He explained that commercial plows always leave slick black ice behind on the pavement. He insisted that a single warm drink was more than enough payment for his work.
A short time later, Emily walked onto the porch carrying a stainless steel thermos filled with steaming hot coffee. She extended her hands and pressed the warm cup into his thick leather gloves.
She looked directly into his eyes and asked why he always spent more time clearing her driveway than he ever did on his own house down the street.
Robert took a small sip of the hot liquid, his eyes drifting down toward the snow-covered ground. His shoulder slouched, and his grip on the coffee cup tightened.
The Worn Photo
He reached deep into his heavy coat pocket and pulled out a small wooden frame holding a picture of a young woman with a wide smile. Snowflakes accumulated on the glass cover as he held it out for Emily to see.
He explained that his daughter Clara had lived in this exact home years ago. She had walked out the front door at dawn for her work shift, slipped on a layer of invisible ice, and never made it back home.
Robert admitted that he had not been there to clear the ice for her that morning. He carried the heavy regret every day, believing he had failed to protect his child.
Tears rolled down Emily’s cheeks as she listened to his voice break under the weight of his memory. She watched his shoulders tremble slightly under his thick winter coat.
He admitted that watching Emily’s car tail lights pull out safely each morning made him feel as though he was keeping his daughter safe too.
A New Beginning
Emily placed her hand over his gloved hands and told him he did not have to shovel his grief alone in the dark anymore.
Later that morning, light poured into a warm kitchen where a young girl sat drawing at the dining table with colorful crayons. Emily tilted a ceramic pitcher and poured steaming cocoa into a pine-tree ceramic mug resting in front of Robert.
Robert grabbed a paper napkin from the table and pressed it against his cheek, wiping away a tear while looking at the warm food placed before him. He mentioned that he had not sat at a dinner table with a family in two decades.
The little girl held up her paper drawing of a colorful house under a bright sun, smiling broadly at him from across the wooden table.
Out in the bright sunlight on the driveway, Emily and Robert stood side-by-side holding black snow shovels, pushing snow together while the little girl threw a snowball into the air behind them.
