Two Squirrels Watch As Gardener Approaches Trapped Sibling In Orchard

  • 3 min read

Caught Beneath The Ground Wire

The red squirrel’s spine pressed flat against the dark diamond mesh as its paws scraped fruitlessly across damp grass.

A thick strip of protective netting pinned the animal to the orchard floor, bunching tightly around its midsection and hindquarters.

A few feet above on a low apple branch, two other red squirrels sat upright on a tension wire, their tails flicking in tight, rapid arcs.

Neither squirrel retreated into the canopy.

Instead, they kept their heads turned downward, watching the trapped animal shift against the stiff plastic barrier.

Careful Steps Across The Orchard Grass

Heavy rubber work boots entered the frame, stepping softly between fallen autumn leaves.

A gardener knelt into the grass, bringing both hands forward in thick gray utility gloves.

The trapped squirrel flattened its ears against its skull and pulled its front limbs toward its chest, curling into a tight ball.

Rather than pulling at the animal, the rescuer placed one palm beside the squirrel’s shoulder to steady the frame.

The fingers of the other hand slid beneath the sharp edge of the wire netting, testing where the tension held tightest.

Up on the wire, the two onlookers shifted their weight from paw to paw, leaning their bodies outward over the branch.

Working The Snags Free

The gardener gripped the wire mesh along the animal’s flank and lifted upward with a slow, even draw.

The stiff netting resisted at first, caught on twigs and clumps of moss embedded in the turf.

With a firm pinch, the worker untangled the edge, creating a pocket of open space above the squirrel’s hind legs.

The small creature tucked its head lower, whiskers brushing the dirt as the shadow of the lifted wire fell away.

A gentle palm smoothed down the animal’s russet coat, checking for any remaining snags around the rear claws.

The squirrel paused for a fraction of a second, feeling the absence of weight against its back.

The Dash For High Ground

With the obstruction cleared, the squirrel’s hind legs kicked against the turf, launching its body forward past the gardener’s knee.

Its bushy tail flared out as it hit the open grass between the netting and the tree row.

The two squirrels on the branch scrambled slightly higher into the fork of the trunk, turning their heads to follow the movement below.

The freed squirrel bounded across the short turf, planted its front claws into the rough bark of the tree, and scrambled up the trunk into the leaves.
