The Snagged Wire
Raindrops dripped from the dark fur of the buffalo calf’s snout as thick wire pressed tight against its skin.
Its nostrils flared against the cold metal, breath misting into the damp air.
Every slight shift dragged the braided strand against raw hide, anchoring the small animal to the fence line.
A few yards back in the pasture, a massive female buffalo planted her hooves into the wet turf.
Her curved horns tilted forward, dark eyes fixed entirely on the fence post.
She took a slow, heavy step forward, water splashing from the muddy grass beneath her weight.
Mud pooled around the calf’s feet as it leaned sideways, unable to pull its head backward through the opening.
Rain continued to patter across the sodden landscape, soaking the calf’s coat until it gleamed black in the morning light.
A Careful Approach
Heavy rubber boots squelched through the muck as a ranger stepped into the frame.
He wore a dark waterproof jacket, his hands encased in thick work gloves.
In his right grip, he carried a pair of long-handled wire cutters, the polished steel jaws catching the grey light.
He did not make sudden movements, keeping his shoulders low and his stride deliberate.
The mother buffalo watched from behind, her nostrils widening as she drew in the scent of wet wool and steel.
Her tail gave a sharp flick against her flank, but she remained rooted in the grass, muscles coiled.
The ranger paused a foot away from the calf’s pinned face, watching the animal’s eyes dart toward the tool.
The calf pulled its ears flat against its head, chin resting awkwardly on the lower wire strand.
He brought the blades forward slowly, angling the tip past the wet whiskers beneath the calf’s jaw.
Precision Under Pressure
The steel jaws of the cutters slid directly against the taut boundary wire, millimeter by millimeter.
Cold rain ran down the ranger’s knuckles as he checked the distance between the calf’s tender cheek and the sharp edge.
One wrong jerk from the frightened calf could mean a painful scrape against the rough steel.
The calf squeezed its eyelids shut, leaning its weight into the post as if bracing for a shock.
The ranger adjusted his grip on the dual handles, planting his boots firmly into the slick mud for leverage.
He squeezed the grips together with a slow, controlled force.
A sharp metallic snap rang out across the open ground.
The severed wire whipped back, instantly releasing the pressure on the calf’s neck.
The ranger stepped back smoothly, opening his palms toward the open field to show empty hands.
Rejoining The Herd
The calf lifted its head, blinking rapidly as the stiffness faded from its neck.
It spun on wet hooves, mud spraying outward from its hind legs as it darted toward the open field.
The cow lowered her broad head, meeting the youngster nose-to-nose in the tall green pasture.
She nudged its flank with the side of her broad muzzle, guiding it past the puddle edge.
Side by side, the two dark silhouettes moved away across the rolling green horizon, disappearing into the misty drizzle.
