Turned Away at the Door
The man in the tailored suit stepped forward onto the sidewalk, planting his body firmly in front of the restaurant’s glass entryway.
An older man with graying stubble and torn denim jeans stopped his stride, looking up calmly.
The host placed one hand on his hip and raised a finger toward the street, ordering the visitor to step back and leave the doorway clear.
The older man spoke quietly, stating that he held a table reservation inside.
The host scoffed, shaking his head and pointing down at the man’s frayed clothes and scuffed boots.
He raised his voice, demanding the man get off the premises before causing further disruption on the sidewalk.
The Chef Steps Outside
The older man reached inside his coat and slowly opened a worn leather-bound registry book with aged, frayed pages.
The host dismissed the book entirely, leaning in close and shouting toward the street.
The glass door swung open, and the head chef emerged in a pristine white double-breasted jacket.
The chef looked between the host and the visitor, his eyebrows furrowing as he stepped into the dispute.
The host gestured aggressively toward the older man, attempting to explain why he was turning him away.
The chef raised an index finger, cutting the host off mid-sentence and gesturing directly toward the visitor.
The True Identity
The host listened as the chef clarified exactly who was standing on the concrete pavement.
The host’s eyes widened instantly, his mouth falling open as the blood drained from his cheeks.
He staggered back half a step against the stone wall, his hands dropping limp at his sides.
The older man tucked the leather book back against his coat and looked the host in the eyes.
The host stammered an apology, his shoulders shrinking inward as the chef continued to admonish him.
The older man turned his back on the host, pushed open the heavy glass door, and walked past the tables beneath the glowing chandelier.
