An Encounter at the Diner
A young man pushed past an elderly veteran standing near the counter of a crowded diner, shoving his shoulder hard.
The older man lost his balance, stumbling sideways and dropping his wooden cane across the black-and-white checkered tile floor.
Rather than stopping to assist or offer an apology, the young man stepped right over the cane and continued toward the exit.
He adjusted the hood of his black sweatshirt, glanced down at his phone screen, and ignored the man struggling on the floor behind him.
The veteran reached down with a veined, wrinkled hand, placing his palm flat against the floor to steady himself.
He slowly pulled his body back up, resting his forearm on the edge of the laminate counter to support his weight.
In a nearby leather booth, a man in a tailored dark grey suit watched every movement in silence.
He set his ceramic coffee cup back onto its saucer, his eyes following the young man as he pushed open the front door and walked out into the street.
The veteran picked up his wooden cane, brushed off his denim jeans, and straightened his military camouflage cap.
An Interview for the Future
Hours later, the same young man walked through the glass doors of a downtown high-rise office building.
He wore a navy blue business suit, smoothing his silk tie as he sat down on a black leather sofa in the waiting area.
A receptionist carrying a digital tablet looked up from her desk and called his name for the scholarship interview.
He stood up immediately with a broad smile, announcing that he had been preparing for this single opportunity all year.
He walked down the long carpeted hallway, pulled open the heavy wooden doors, and stepped into the corner office.
Behind a massive polished desk sat the middle-aged man who had been sitting in the diner booth earlier that morning.
The executive slowly rotated his leather armchair to face the entrance, placing his hands together on top of the desk.
The applicant stopped in his tracks, his smile disappearing as his eyes widened in surprise.
A Decision Made
The executive rested his palms flat against a dark leather binder containing application folders.
He stated clearly that his foundation awarded full college scholarships exclusively to individuals who demonstrated leadership qualities.
He explained that true leaders did not push past older citizens or knock walking canes out of their hands.
The young man held his hands out, his face turning pale as he stumbled over his words to offer excuses.
He explained that he was having a bad morning, but the executive remained seated without opening the applicant’s folder.
Instead, the executive turned his gaze toward the office entrance as the double doors clicked open.
A Different Success Story
The elderly veteran walked into the office, accompanying a young woman dressed in a neat sweater and trousers.
The executive stood up from his chair, walked around the large desk, and handed an official scholarship binder directly to the young woman.
The grandfather placed his right hand over his chest, his mouth open as water gathered in the corners of his eyes.
He shook the executive’s hand while his granddaughter held the folder tightly against her chest.
The rejected applicant stood against the far wall in his navy suit, his arms hanging limp at his sides as he watched them celebrate.
Outside on the street, rain ran down the clear glass walls of the building entrance.
The young man walked down the wet concrete sidewalk alone, drops of water soaking into the shoulders of his suit jacket as he walked away.
