Trapped Young Osprey Calls As Rescuers Step Forward

  • 3 min read

Trapped By The Water

The young osprey beat its wings against the tall grass, straining against the heavy cord binding its leg to a dock post.

A white and brown adult bird circled in tight loops above the canal, calling down toward the muddy shoreline.

Two pickup trucks rolled across the open field and pulled up beside the marsh bank.

Two wildlife officers stepped out into the grass, adjusting their gloves as they took note of the raptor’s position.

The bird lunged forward, flapping furiously, but the thick cord held fast against the wooden piling.

Moving In Close

The officers jogged across the clearing, boots sinking into the wet marsh soil with each step.

The adult osprey banked sharply overhead, dipping its wingtips close to the surface of the water.

One officer knelt beside the tall reeds, holding a pair of red-handled cutting shears in his right hand.

His partner crouched beside him, extending both hands clad in blue nitrile gloves toward the struggling fledgling.

The young raptor opened its beak wide and let out sharp, high-pitched shrieks as the hands closed in.

Both officers stayed low, keeping their movements deliberate and controlled to avoid startling the bird further.

The officer in blue gloves placed one hand gently across the bird’s back, pinning its wings to prevent injury.

The bird pecked toward the gloved fingers, kicking its talons against the mud and grass stems.

Working Free

Working slowly, the kneeling officer slid the blade of the shears beneath the tight loops of synthetic twine.

The cord had coiled several times around the base of the bird’s leg, pulling skin taut with every thrash.

He guided the tip of the tool flat against the scaly leg, ensuring the sharp edge faced outward away from the raptor.

With a single squeeze of the red handles, the braided cord parted cleanly.

The second officer eased his grip, loosening his fingers from the bird’s speckled feathers.

The young bird shuffled forward a few steps in the grass, testing the freedom of its outstretched claws.

It paused near the edge of the wooden dock, spreading both wings wide to shake free of the loose fibers.

Reunion On The Pier

With a quick thrust of its legs, the young osprey hopped up onto the top of the wooden mooring post.

From across the water, the large adult bird flared its tail feathers and descended directly toward the platform.

The adult dropped its talons onto the wooden planking right beside the young bird, fanning its massive wings out wide.

Both birds stood shoulder to shoulder on the edge of the dock, gazing out together across the open water.
