Can Two Women Reach A Stuck Calf Before The Wolves Do

  • 2 min read

A Sudden Standoff In The Pasture

The young calf sank up to its chest in thick, grey mud, kicking its front legs against the mire without gaining any ground.

A few yards away, gray wolves paced across the dry grass, their ears pointed forward as they circled the pit.

Two women running across the open field waved their arms over their heads, shouting loudly to break the predators’ focus.

The wolves backed away toward the tree line, watching from a distance as the women reached the edge of the mudhole.

Setting Up The Platform

The brown calf let out a low bellow, its chin resting directly on the wet sludge.

One woman dropped a heavy backpack onto the grass and uncoiled a thick length of rope.

Her companion grabbed a wide orange recovery strap and two long wooden planks from nearby.

She slid the first wooden board across the surface of the mud, testing the footing with her boot before stepping forward.

The wood distributed their weight, keeping them from sinking alongside the trapped animal.

Working Against The Mud

Kneeling on the plank, one rescuer reached down and carefully worked the orange strap underneath the calf’s chest.

The calf shifted weakly, its brown fur caked in thick, dark clay.

With the strap secured beneath the animal’s front legs, both women took hold of the haul line and planted their feet firmly against the timber.

They leaned back together, applying steady, rhythmic pressure to break the vacuum holding the calf down.

Mud sucked loudly against the calf’s belly as its front hooves slowly cleared the bottom of the pit.

With one final coordinated pull, the calf slid entirely free of the hole and landed upright on the wooden platform.

Reunion In The Golden Light

The young animal stood on trembling legs, shaking wet mud from its sides.

The women guided it along the boards toward the solid green grass of the meadow.

A large brown cow walked briskly across the pasture toward them under the late afternoon sun.

The calf trotted forward and pressed its mud-streaked nose against the mother cow’s muzzle while the two women stood watching from a few paces back.
