Mom Offers Daughter Shelter But Sets A Firm Boundary First

  • 4 min read

An Unexpected Request

The young woman held her hands out, her palms turning upward as she faced her mother in the living room.

She explained that she and her partner had lost another apartment and needed a place to stay for a while.

Her mother stood still, crossing her arms over her brown dress as she listened to the request.

She pointed out that this was the second apartment lost in recent months and asked what was happening.

The daughter stepped closer, asking for immediate financial help and requesting two hundred dollars.

Her mother shook her head, reminding her that four hundred dollars had already been provided just seven days prior.

The daughter put one hand on her hip and pressed her mother again for the cash.

A Full House and Unspoken Expectations

Sometime later, the front door swung open into the home’s tiled entryway.

The daughter walked inside pushing a large covered baby stroller, accompanied by a young man carrying two heavy suitcases.

The mother, dressed in a sharp black suit blazer, stepped forward from the hallway and stopped in her tracks.

She stared at the man standing near the luggage and asked where the baby was.

She admitted she expected only her daughter and grandchild to arrive, not a full household.

The daughter insisted she could not simply leave her partner behind.

The mother motioned with her hand toward the adjoining kitchen area for a quiet conversation.

Standing near the stainless steel refrigerator, the mother questioned why the young man was not staying with his own mother.

The daughter gestured wildly with her hands, explaining that his mother called him lazy and refused to host him.

The mother crossed her arms and stated she would not take care of an adult man.

The daughter challenged her, asking why she could not simply get him a job where she worked.

Opportunity Missed at the Workplace

The following morning, the mother entered the kitchen dressed in a bright red formal suit.

She walked up to the marble-top dining table where the young man sat holding a spoon over a large bowl of cereal.

She informed him that a position was secured for him at her place of employment and that he needed to arrive by twelve thirty that afternoon.

The young man stared down at his cereal bowl, holding the spoon motionless in his hand.

He looked up slowly and asked why he could not start the job next week instead.

The mother pressed her lips together, turned on her high heels, and walked out of the kitchen area.

The Confrontation and Departure

Later that afternoon, the mother returned home and walked directly into the living room area.

She found the young man sitting on the sofa holding a black video game controller in both hands, with her daughter resting beside him in a black robe.

She demanded to know why he failed to appear for his scheduled shift and how bad that made her look at work.

The young man kept his hands on the controller buttons and stated he had never asked her to find him a job in the first place.

The mother pointed her index finger toward the hallway and informed him that he had to leave her house immediately.

The daughter leaped up from the couch, pointing her finger at her mother and raising her voice in anger.

She accused her mother of trying to drive a wedge between them because she did not have a partner of her own.

The mother widened her eyes and listed everything she paid for, including the car notes and living expenses.

The daughter turned around, grabbed the young man by his arm, and pushed open the front door.

As the heavy door closed shut behind them, tears tracked down the mother’s cheeks while she stood motionless in the middle of her living room.
