A Late Night Encounter
An elderly woman sat alone on a wet metal bench outside a hospital entrance at midnight as rain streamed down.
A man in a white shirt stopped walking when he noticed her sitting motionless in the cold air.
He walked over and asked if she was alright being out so late in the storm.
She looked up with a calm face, replying that she was simply getting fresh air.
The man took a seat next to her, adjusting his shoulder bag while watching the empty street.
Unspoken Burden
Earlier that evening, a doctor sat across a wooden desk inside the hospital complex.
He reviewed medical records before telling her that her remaining time was limited to six months.
She absorbed the diagnosis silently, thanking the physician before walking out through the sliding glass doors.
Instead of leaving the grounds, she chose the outdoor bench to sit with the news by herself.
She explained to the stranger that sharing tragic news immediately makes the moment about other people’s grief.
The man listened without interrupting, letting her speak at her own pace.
A Gentle Suggestion
He insisted on driving her home so she would not have to wait in the cold weather.
She eventually accepted, stepping inside his vehicle as rain tapped against the windshield.
As he drove down the dark streets, she remarked that his posture reminded her of her late husband.
She then turned to him and urged him to call his mother early the next morning.
He paused, staring at the road ahead, and admitted his mother had passed away two years prior.
She nodded gently, telling him to call whoever else he wished he had stayed in touch with.
A Call In The Dark
He pulled the car up to her house, watching her safely walk to her front door.
Once she was inside, he remained parked on the curb with the engine running.
He lifted his mobile phone, tapped the screen, and placed it against his ear while looking down.
Tears gathered in his eyes as someone answered on the other end of the line.
“I know it is late,” he whispered into the phone. “I just wanted to hear your voice.”
Back outside near the hospital entrance, he looked at the camera lens and formed a heart shape using his fingers.
