Wild Fox Trapped Under Fence Prompts Immediate Human Rescue Effort

  • 2 min read

Trapped Beneath the Wire

The young red fox dug its front paws into the damp earth, its shoulders wedged tight inside a curled cylinder of metal wire netting.

Its bushy tail twitched against the dead grass outside the loop, unable to pull backward or drive forward through the narrow steel mesh.

A few yards up the lawn, a second fox stood upright near the rear tire of a white pickup truck, its amber eyes locked onto the struggling animal.

Rubber boots crunched against the damp grass as a woman jogged down the fence line toward the trapped animal.

Careful Hands at Work

She dropped to both knees in the dirt beside the fence post, wearing thick leather work gloves.

The fox pressed its belly flat to the ground, keeping its chin pinned in the dry leaves while panting shallowly through parted teeth.

Rather than tugging at the animal itself, she grasped the sharp outer rim of the chicken wire with both hands.

She anchored the metal ring firmly with her right palm to prevent the jagged wire tips from catching on the fox’s ginger coat.

With her left hand, she gently worked the coiled edge backward over the animal’s haunches inch by inch.

The fox let out a short, high-pitched vocalization and twisted its body, trying to snap around inside the tightening cylinder.

Loosening the Grip

The woman kept her hands low and steady, holding the steel open wide enough to give the fox room to twist.

She drew the wire tube completely back over its hips, freeing the rear legs from the mesh.

The fox turned around inside the opening, planted its front paws on the turf, and surged forward out of the opening.

It paused on the grass just inches from the woman’s gloved hands, shaking loose dirt from its fur.

Its ears swiveled back toward the kneeling rescuer, pupils wide in the autumn light.

A Dash Across the Pasture

The fox blinked, wheeled around on all four paws, and broke into a steady trot across the open field.

Up the hill, the second fox turned and bounded along the perimeter fence toward the red leaves of the timberline.

The woman remained resting back on her heels beside the empty cylinder of wire, watching both foxes disappear toward the weathered gray barn.
