A Sudden Confrontation on the Roadside
The man tapped his phone screen against the wooden table edge, pointing his index finger toward the rows of glass jars resting on the checkered tablecloth.
He stood over the elderly woman, telling her that nobody wanted to buy jam off the side of the road and warning her to pack up her setup before he dialed the police.
She held a small glass jar tightly between both hands, explaining that she was only attempting to earn enough money to buy basic groceries for the week.
He ignored her response and leaned forward, grabbing the cardboard sign that listed her homemade apple butter for six dollars.
She reached out her hand to stop him, urging him to leave the sign in place so drivers passing by could see the price.
The Tension Escalates at the Stand
Instead of placing the sign back down, the man pulled out his smartphone and held it directly in front of her face.
He told her to speak to the camera and explain why she was panhandling along the open road.
She kept her head raised, calmly replying that she was not begging, but simply selling items she had prepared herself earlier that morning.
He held up one of the jars, claiming she was wasting her morning and making the entire stretch of road look cheap.
She folded her hands near her chest, quietly mentioning that she had not eaten a complete meal since the previous day.
He turned away slightly, repeating his demand for her to clear off the shoulder before he brought the local sheriff into the matter.
An Unexpected Customer Steps Up
A dark SUV pulled off onto the gravel shoulder, its tires crunching against the fallen autumn leaves.
A driver stepped out of the vehicle, walked straight past the man holding the phone, and pulled a leather wallet from his jacket pocket.
He counted out several bills, handed them directly to the woman, and requested three full jars of apple butter.
The man standing with the phone shifted his feet, asking the customer if he was seriously purchasing items from a roadside pity table.
The driver did not reply to him, instead taking a sample bite of apple butter on a piece of bread and telling the woman her product tasted excellent.
He then asked her to hand him four additional jars to take home.
The Crowd Begins to Gather
Within moments, two more vehicles pulled off the asphalt and onto the leaf-covered dirt shoulder behind the SUV.
A group of passengers stepped out and formed a line along the front of the wooden table.
One customer asked her to set aside six jars, while another offered to purchase whatever inventory remained on the table if she had enough paper bags.
The woman reached into a cardboard box under the counter, pulled out a brown paper bag, and began carefully packing jars for the line of people.
The man who had threatened to call the police put his smartphone back into his pocket, took two steps backward, and watched the crowd from behind his parked car.
The woman handed a packed paper bag across the checkered tablecloth to a customer, accepting cash payment as the line continued to advance.
