Pinned to the Orchard Floor
The young raptor’s sharp yellow talons remained knotted deep inside the mesh netting covering the orchard dirt.
Dry brown leaves shifted underneath its speckled chest as another bird swept low across the tree canopy, crying out from above.
Between the neat rows of fruit trees, a worker walked up the dirt path toward the grounded predator.
Hands on the Feathered Shoulders
The man dropped to his knees in the dust, extending two thick leather work gloves toward the bird’s flank.
“Easy buddy, easy,” he whispered, lowering his palms over the folded wings to hold them firmly against the bird’s sides.
The bird turned its dark beak, watching the heavy gloves press down to keep its primary feathers from thrashing against the sharp wire.
With one gloved palm maintaining gentle pressure on the bird’s back, the man reached down with his right hand to inspect the tangle around the yellow feet.
Thin strands of netting had wrapped tightly around the middle digits, binding both talons close against the ground.
Working the Knots Free
The rescuer worked slowly, using his thick leather fingertips to pry the tight loops away from the scaly yellow skin.
The hawk shifted its weight, leaning slightly against the man’s knee as the tension pulled on its leg joints.
Patience guided every tug, carefully slipping one loop over the black claw before addressing the next tight knot.
The companion bird circled back along the lane, passing just above the tree line and keeping its eyes on the dirt floor below.
With a final firm pull, the remaining strand slid over the rear talon and snapped free of the wire grid.
Taking to the Air
The man released his grip and stepped back into a crouch, resting both hands on his thighs.
The young bird stood upright on yellow legs, turning its head left and right to inspect the clearing.
It hopped forward once across the dried leaves, shaking the lingering debris from its tail feathers.
Its broad wings snapped open, catching the orchard draft as it lifted off the dirt track and flew down the long tree-lined row toward the truck parked in the distance.
