Can A Driver Free A Trapped Calf Right Beside Its Mother

  • 3 min read

Caught in the Wire

The young bison calf jerked its front leg against the lower strands of the barbed wire fence, splashing muddy brown water across the dirt road.

Coils of stiff steel wire gripped tightly around the calf’s small lower hoof, pinning the animal against the wooden fence post.

A low, guttural cry pushed from the calf’s chest as it leaned back, attempting to pull its limb free from the metal braid.

Just a few feet away stood the massive dark silhouette of the mother bison, staring forward with her heavy head lowered toward the trapped calf.

The driver’s door of a brown pickup truck clicked open, creaking as it swung outward into the cool country air.

Stepping Into the Mud

A man wearing a tan canvas coat and a baseball cap stepped out into the dirt, gripping a pair of red-handled wire snips in his gloved hand.

He walked straight past the open truck door, planting his work boots into the wet clay just paces away from the towering adult bison.

The mother remained stationary, her black horns curving upward as her dark eyes tracked the man’s boots moving across the ground.

He lowered his body directly into the wet puddle beside the fence, resting his knees in the gray mud without pulling back.

The calf kicked again, its tawny orange coat shivering as the steel fence line rattled from end to end along the boundary.

Working Beneath the Horns

The man wrapped his left arm firmly over the calf’s small back, anchoring the struggling animal against his own chest to keep it steady.

With his gloved right hand, he guided the hardened steel jaws of the cutters beneath the tight loop wrapping the calf’s fetlock.

He squeezed the red handles together with steady pressure, working millimeter by millimeter to avoid pinching the animal’s skin.

The adult bison took a slight step closer, her thick neck muscles shifting as steam puffed from her nostrils into the morning air.

The man kept his focus entirely on the rusted wire, repositioning the blades against the tension point holding the foot captive.

A sharp metallic snap echoed off the side of the truck as the thick strand finally parted under the pressure.

Rejoining the Herd

The calf sprang upward, its freed hoof hitting the puddle with a hollow splash as all four legs found solid ground.

It shook its head quickly, spinning around in the puddle to face the open dirt road leading away from the barbed fence.

“Easy, easy, big guy,” the man murmured, lowering the wire snips to his lap while resting back on his heels in the wet dirt.

The calf trotted forward without limping, pressing its tawny flank against the thick, dark fur of the mother bison’s front leg.

The massive cow turned her broad shoulders down the road, walking away beside the truck as the young calf followed closely behind her toward the distant herd.
