Predator Closes in on Ducklings as a Jogger Intervenes

  • 2 min read

A Sudden Standoff by the Water

A red fox darted out from the tall lakeside grass, fixing its eyes on four tiny ducklings huddled near the water.

A runner in a pink top and black shorts broke her stride on the dirt path and sprinted directly toward the shoreline.

She threw both arms overhead, widening her stance to place her body directly between the predator and the vulnerable brood.

The mother duck flapped into the shallow water, calling out as the fox crouched low against the embankment.

The runner stomped the dirt, shouting as the fox lunged forward toward the small cluster of feathers.

Holding the Line

Reaching down, the woman grabbed a dry tree branch lying along the water’s edge.

She snapped the stick forward through the air, sweeping it directly in front of the fox’s snout.

The fox reared up on its hind legs, swatting at the wood before taking a quick step backward.

She advanced two steps, keeping the branch pointed firmly ahead and standing tall over the ducklings.

The fox turned its head toward the reed line, paused for a beat, and trotted back into the tall grass.

Guiding Them Home

With the shoreline clear, the runner dropped the stick and knelt in the soft grass beside the ducklings.

She extended her open palms, gently cupping the small yellow birds one by one.

She lowered her hands to the water’s surface, letting the ducklings slip into the gentle ripples.

The mother duck paddled closer, gathering all four ducklings in her wake.

The runner stood up straight on the grassy bank, resting her hands on her hips as the duck family swam out into the golden sunset across the lake.
