A Deadly Circle Closes In
A trapped crane thrashed violently against black mesh netting as a dozen monitor lizards crawled across the red dirt toward it.
Their long, blue-tinted tongues flicked inches from the bird’s tangled feathers.
A woman stepped between the predators and the shoreline, waving her arms and shouting to push them back.
The lizards did not scatter.
They held their ground on the sunbaked sand, creeping closer with low, deliberate strides.
Forming A Protective Line
Footsteps pounded across the dry riverbed as a wildlife officer sprinted into view carrying a flat shield.
He lowered the heavy board into the shallow water, planting it firmly into the silt to block the advancing reptiles.
The lizards hissed and pressed against the barrier, their scaly bodies bumping against the metal frame.
The officer held the shield steady with both hands, shouting commands as more reptiles crawled from the brush.
A second rescuer dropped to her knees beside the struggling bird on the rocky bank.
Cutting Away The Trap
The woman reached out slowly, placing a palm gently over the bird’s back to keep its wings pinned down.
She took a pair of orange shears and slid the rounded blade beneath the tightly knotted nylon strings.
Every slight movement caused the bird to stretch its neck and hiss toward the nearby water.
Snip by snip, she severed the thick cords tangled across its primary feathers.
The netting peeled away in heavy, dirt-caked strands, falling loose onto the river stones.
The officer kept his weight leaned forward against the shield, preventing the lizards from surging past the edge.
Taking To The Sky
The rescuer gathered the tangled bundle of mesh and pulled it clear of the bird’s long legs.
She lifted her hands and took three steps back toward the dry bank.
The crane stood upright on yellow feet, shaking its gray wings until each quill snapped into place.
It dipped its beak toward the clear stream before flexing its chest and launching upward.
The massive wings caught the canyon breeze, carrying the bird directly over the palm canopy and into the blinding afternoon sun.
