Mother Deer Watches Helplessly As Her Baby Struggles In A Deep Tank

  • 4 min read

A Tiny Head Above Murky Water

A small spotted fawn paddled its front legs against the galvanized steel wall of a deep water trough, unable to gain purchase against the slippery green algae. Beside the rim, an adult doe stretched her neck downward, nuzzling the soaked ears of her baby while a second fawn stood nearby in the dry brush. The water level sat inches below the lip, leaving the young animal fully submerged except for its snout and dark eyes.

A man stepped out from the treeline, his boots crunching lightly over dry pine needles as he approached the container. The doe took two steps back into the sunlight, her ears pivoted forward toward the rustling grass. The man slowed his stride, lowering his center of gravity as he walked directly toward the edge of the galvanized tub.

He extended both hands over the rusted edge, palms facing outward to show empty fingers. The fawn blinked against the rippling surface, its chest rising and falling rapidly against the cold, murky liquid. The man dipped his fingers into the green film covering the water, carefully sliding his palms beneath the fawn’s small ribcage and hind legs.

Lifting The Baby To Safety

With a firm grip under its chest, he raised his elbows and lifted the drenched animal straight up over the metal rim. Streams of murky water poured from the fawn’s spotted fur, splashing back into the tank as its spindly legs kicked softly in the open air. The man leaned back, pivoting toward the grassy bank to lower the fawn gently into the warm turf.

The fawn’s hooves sank into the soft soil as the man released his grip and stepped back onto his heels. Immediately, the mother doe stepped forward, lowering her chin to lick the wet spots along the baby’s spine. The young fawn shook droplets from its ears, remaining shoulder-to-shoulder with its mother in the tall grass.

The man stood and looked back down into the trough, where rotting leaves and thick green algae covered the bottom. He turned toward his supplies, picking up a flat metal scraper and a stiff-bristled brush. Kneeling beside the drained tank, he drove the metal blade across the corrugated bottom, peeling away thick layers of decayed plant matter.

Scrubbing And Refilling The Tank

He scrubbed the metal floor in long, rhythmic strokes, loosening the stubborn moss clinging to the steel ridges. The deer family remained a few paces away in the clearing, watching the repetitive motion of the brush against the metal base. Once the debris was gathered and cleared away, the bare silver surface of the tank reflected the afternoon sun.

The man grabbed a galvanized bucket and carried it to a clean water source, returning with the pail filled to the brim. He tipped the bucket forward, pouring a clear stream that drummed against the fresh metal before pooling smoothly at the base. The young fawn took a hesitant step closer, lowering its nose toward the splash of clear water.

He hauled bucket after bucket until the clean water reached the upper lip of the basin. The surface settled into a flat, mirror-like sheet under the canopy of birch trees.

A Gathering At The Rim

A large wild turkey strutted from the treeline, fanning its tail feathers as it stepped toward the fresh basin alongside a mature buck. The mother doe dipped her muzzle directly into the clear surface beside her two fawns, drinking steadily without lifting her head. Along the base of the metal tub, a row of chipmunks stood up on their hind legs, twitching their whiskers beside the feeding herd while the man stood in the clearing with his hands resting quietly in his pockets.
