An Unnoticed Hand
The woman stood up from her outdoor cafe table, leaving her orange phone lying next to her plate of steak and fries.
A man walking down the narrow cobblestone alley slowed his pace as he reached the table. His hand reached down, scooped up the bright orange device, and tucked it into his grip before walking away.
When the woman sat back down and reached toward the tabletop, her fingers brushed empty wood. Her eyes widened, and she leaned forward to scan the stone floor beneath her chair.
A Sudden Turn In The Alley
Further down the corridor, the man stopped under the sunlight, staring down at the screen in his palms. He glanced over his shoulder toward the bustling terrace behind him.
He pivoted on his heels and broke into a full sprint back toward the cafe. Approaching her table with his head bowed, he extended both arms and placed the phone directly into her waiting hands.
She looked up into his face and smiled, nodding gently as she accepted the phone back. He offered a brief nod of his own before turning around to walk down the street alone.
A Package Offered
A short time later, the woman walked up the same stone walkway holding a brown paper takeout bag. She spotted the man standing near a stone doorway and extended the package toward his chest.
He accepted the bag with both hands, nodding in appreciation as she spoke to him. She stepped back with a smile, leaving him holding the warm food in the quiet street.
Instead of opening the bag, the man turned and carried it through a series of narrow brick passages.
Shared On The Cobblestones
At the end of a long alleyway, an elderly woman sat on a flat layer of cardboard spread across the asphalt. The man bent his knees, leaned forward, and handed the brown paper bag into her hands.
She unfastened the handles and looked up at him with a wide smile. The man pulled over a stack of cardboard boxes, placed them against the stone wall, and sat down beside her.
Both of them held burgers in their hands, took large bites, and leaned their heads back against the brick wall, laughing together in the sunlight.
