A Sudden Confrontation At The Head Table
The young groom walked across the reception hall floor, heading directly toward the chair at the main table. Before he could pull the gold-trimmed seat out, an older man in a matching black tuxedo lunged forward and gripped the back of the chair with both hands.
“Back off! You’re not taking that seat!” the older man yelled, thrusting a pointed finger inches from the groom’s nose. Guests at neighboring tables turned their heads, their wine glasses hovering midway to their mouths.
The groom stood straight and kept his hands resting naturally by his side. “I’m the groom,” he answered, his voice level. “That’s my chair.”
“Then quit showing up looking like you borrowed everything!” the older man spat back, waving his hand up and down at the groom’s attire.
Defending A Father’s Keepsake
The groom raised his left wrist and tapped the stainless steel watch face. “Don’t insult what my father left me,” he said firmly.
Instead of backing down, the older man leaned in until their foreheads nearly touched. “Move! Get out of my way!” he shouted, swinging an arm out wide toward the room. “Keep that attitude and I’ll shut this entire reception down.”
A woman sitting nearby covered her mouth with both hands. Beside her, a seated man froze with his water goblet tilted against his lips, eyes wide.
“You don’t have that authority,” the groom replied, stepping forward until their tuxedo lapels almost brushed.
“I paid for this place!” the older man shouted, his face flushed red as he jabbed a finger down toward the patterned carpet.
“You paid my company,” the groom said simply.
Proof In Black And White
The older man frowned, blinking twice. “What are you talking about?”
The groom reached inside his jacket, pulled out a folded white document, and opened it between them. He ran his index finger firmly across the bold header near the top of the contract.
“Read who owns the venue,” the groom said.
The older man snatched the sheet and held it up to the chandelier light. His eyes darted across the lines of printed text, scanning the corporate name and signature line at the bottom.
His jaw dropped open, and the tight lines around his eyes widened. “You own this place?”
“Every room you threatened to shut down,” the groom answered, holding his gaze.
Reclaiming Control Of The Room
The older man lowered the paper, his knuckles slackening around the edge of the page. “You’re humiliating me in front of everyone,” he muttered, his shoulders dropping a couple of inches.
“You did that yourself,” the groom said, tapping the silver watch on his wrist once more.
The groom reached out, took the paper back from the older man’s hand, and set it down onto the white tablecloth beside a silver fork.
“Your speech is cancelled. Your table gets moved,” the groom stated, turning his body toward the head table.
The older man shook his head slightly, his mouth slightly agape. “You can’t do this.”
“Watch me,” the groom replied.
The groom smoothed his tuxedo jacket with both hands, turned his back to the man, and took his position at the center of the hall.
