Stepping Into The Woods
A father swung a rolled blue sleeping pad over his shoulder as he walked down a pine-needle path beside his two young children.
His daughter marched on his left, gripping a tall wooden walking stick in her right hand while her backpack shifted against her shoulders with every step.
To his right, her younger brother trotted along in a bright blue t-shirt emblazoned with a dinosaur, his eyes darting between the towering pine trees above.
The father stopped in a small clearing framed by tall evergreens, where a green dome tent sat pitched on the ground near a ring of stones.
He unslung his gear, dropped his shoulders, and smiled down at the children as they paused beside him.
“Okay team, our first camping trip starts now,” he declared while unclipping his pack straps.
The girl tilted her head back, gazing up into the dense canopy that filtered the afternoon light across the forest floor.
Setting Up Camp
The young boy bounced on his feet beside a large duffel bag resting on the dry ground.
He pointed a small plastic dinosaur toy toward the pitched tent and asked if they could sleep inside right away.
The father crouched down on one knee, resting his hand against the zip opening of the heavy canvas duffel bag.
“First we have to set it up,” the father replied, unzipping the main compartment to pull out the remaining gear.
The girl tucked her wooden walking stick under her arm and grinned, declaring herself the designated camping expert of the group.
Together, they unpacked supplies, adjusted sleeping pads, and prepared the campfire area before dusk settled across the forest.
Under The Night Sky
As darkness blanketed the woods, a fire lit up the circle of logs, casting an amber glow across their faces.
Warm lanterns sat on wooden stumps around the campsite, illuminating the base of the surrounding pine trees.
The father sat on a large fallen log between his two children, holding a metal mug between both hands.
The young girl reached her arm toward the sky, pointing up at a bright field of stars visible above the tree line.
“Dad, look at all those stars,” she said, her chin lifted high.
Her father glanced upward, taking a small sip from his mug before looking over at his son sitting on his left in a brown hoodie.
The little boy leaned forward, resting his hands on his knees as he looked into the flames and asked if they could come camping every single weekend.
The father let out a quiet laugh, shifting his mug to one hand while gesturing in surprise.
“Every weekend? That’s a lot of camping,” he chuckled while watching both kids grin across the firelight.
Morning By The Fire
The next morning, smoke curled softly from the glowing fire pit as morning light broke through the high pines.
The father sat back on the log in a navy sweater, holding a blue enamel coffee mug.
His son came running over in a green hoodie, jumping up and down on the dirt path while announcing how well he had slept inside the tent.
The father raised his eyebrows slightly, looking at the boy with a half-smile as he reminded him that he had woken up twice during the night.
His daughter stepped into the clearing wearing a yellow sweater, resting her hands at her side as she looked at her dad.
“Dad, you loved camping too,” she observed, watching his expression soften.
He patted his knee, took a look at both of their eager faces, and yielded to their excitement.
“You caught me. Same time next weekend?” he asked with a wide smile.
Both children squealed and threw their arms around their father’s neck as he sat on the log, wrapping his arms around both of them for a group hug while the tents stood in the sunlit clearing behind them.
