Glued To Glowing Screens
A mother tapped away on her smartphone screen while sitting cross-legged on a checkered picnic blanket spread across the bright green grass. Beside her, three children sat quietly on the fabric, each staring down at their own handheld device without glancing up at the sunny park around them.
The father looked around at the towering green trees and the open lawn stretching out under the clear sky. He lowered his screen slightly, turned his head toward his family, and remarked on how beautiful the day was outside.
His wife nodded in agreement without shifting her eyes from her screen, while their eldest daughter tapped her fingers across her display, explaining that she just needed to send one quick message. The young boy nestled between his parents turned toward his dad and asked if he could open a game on his screen.
Packing Away The Digital World
The father smiled gently and uncrossed his legs, reaching over toward the woven wicker picnic basket resting at the edge of the blanket. He looked around at his family and proposed that they put all of their electronic devices away for the rest of the day.
One by one, multiple hands reached inward over the basket, dropping smartphones and small tablets into the woven container. The father picked up his own phone, placed it inside alongside the others, and pulled the lid closed.
The mother stood up onto the grass, her posture relaxing as she took in the open space around them. A broad smile spread across her face as she watched her children stretch their arms and look up into the trees.
Chasing Flying Discs In The Sun
The young girl cupped a bright green plastic flying disc in both hands, hugging it tightly against her floral dress. She giggled aloud, mentioning that she had almost forgotten how much fun it was to play outside in the grass.
Her brother took the plastic disc from her, stepped back, and whipped his arm forward across the lawn. The green disc spun horizontally through the warm air, gliding straight toward their father who stood several yards away.
The father tracked the disc with his eyes, extended his right arm high above his head, and snatched the toy out of the air. He called out in celebration, turning back toward his children with a wide grin before launching the disc back across the grass.
The children scrambled across the lawn together, their feet kicking through the green blades as they chased the floating toy. The mother stood nearby with her hands open, cheering as the kids jumped up to grab the disc in mid-air.
Gathering On The Wooden Park Bench
After running across the field, the family walked together over to a weathered wooden park bench located near the edge of the tree line. The mother and father took their seats on the wooden slats, gathering the children close to sit on their laps.
The little boy leaned against his mother’s side, resting his hand on her knee while looking up into her face with a beaming smile. Beside him, his sister nestled against her father’s chest, chatting happily while looking back and forth between her parents.
The father wrapped his arms securely around his daughter, while the mother pulled her son into a warm hug on the bench. Both parents leaned their heads inward, looking at their kids with calm, soft smiles as the afternoon light shifted into a warm glow.
All four of them leaned together into a close family embrace on the wooden bench, their arms wrapped around each other as the golden sunlight illuminated the trees behind them.
