A Hard Spill on Wet Cobblestones
The bicycle’s front tire slid out across the wet stone pavers, sending the young courier hard onto his hip. Metal clattered against the street as the bent frame skidded past the curb.
A heavily tattooed man in a dark vest moved toward the fallen rider. He bent his knees and lowered himself down beside the scattered gear.
The young man stayed flat on the ground, gripping his side with one hand while breathing through tight lips. The man rested a steady hand on his shoulder, keeping him from sitting up too quickly.
Resting Against the Wall
Together, they moved toward the brick facade of a nearby pub. The young courier slumped down onto the curb beside an orange delivery thermal bag.
The bearded man stayed low in front of him, checking his arms and speaking in quiet, even tones. The courier rubbed his collarbone and stared down at the puddle by his sneakers.
A plastic water bottle changed hands. The man gave a nod, stood up straight, and turned to walk down the narrow lane.
Left alone, the courier opened the cap and took a slow drink, his eyes following the man’s boots as they disappeared around the corner. He set the bottle down, rested his elbows on his knees, and buried his face deep into both palms.
Walking Into the Workshop
Down the street, the man pushed open the tall double doors beneath a sign reading Hub & Spoke Cycles. Racks of bicycle frames hung in long lines from the rafters above.
Mechanics looked up from their repair stands as he walked through the center aisle. He stopped near the assembly benches and pointed toward a sleek red road bike mounted near the rear wall.
Minutes later, the man walked back out onto the street, guiding the bright crimson racing frame along the wet sidewalk by its handlebars.
A Brand New Ride
The young delivery courier was still seated on the ground with his head down when the metallic click of a freehub sounded right in front of him.
He lifted his head and blinked at the red frame parked inches from his knees. His mouth opened, and his hands gripped the edge of the stone bench as he looked up into the man’s face.
The man smiled, extended his arm, and pushed the handlebars into the courier’s open hands. The young man leaped up from the curb, wrapping his arms tightly around the older man’s shoulders.
He swung his right leg over the top tube, clicked his shoes onto the pedals, and pushed forward into the damp alleyway. The man stood under the glowing wall lantern, watching the red rear wheel roll smoothly away down the cobblestones.
