The Counter Request
An elderly man in a navy wool coat smoothed a worn, handwritten letter against the wooden counter. He looked across the display of fresh stems and asked if he could get one small arrangement made.
From behind the counter, a manager in a tailored dark blazer stepped forward immediately. She shook her head, stating clearly that their store’s custom arrangements started at ninety dollars.
The man pulled a small stack of bills from his pocket, counting out twelve dollars onto the wood. His eyes dropped slightly as he explained that twelve dollars was all he had with him.
Standing beside the manager, a young florist named Olivia looked at the paper bills on the counter. She pulled a fresh white rose from the display bucket and told the man she would gladly make a bouquet for twelve dollars.
Defying The Rules
The manager narrowed her eyes and reached out a hand, telling Olivia directly not to proceed. Olivia paused for a brief second, holding the stem firmly between her fingers before continuing to gather filler greenery.
The older man held up the yellowed paper in his hand, his voice quiet. He explained that the white flowers were for his wife, who had loved them deeply throughout their years together.
The manager folded her arms across her chest and repeated that their boutique specialized only in luxury arrangements. Olivia did not look up from her work table as she gathered the stems into a tight bundle.
Olivia wound florist tape around the cut stems and stated that today, she was putting together a memory. She took a sheet of crisp white wrapping paper, folded it cleanly around the white roses, and tied the bundle off with a satin ribbon.
The man took the wrapped flowers into both hands, pressing his fingers gently against the stems. A slight smile formed at the corners of his mouth as he thanked her and walked out into the street.
A Sudden Return
Days later, the shop door opened again as a figure entered wearing a tailored three-piece gray suit and tie. The manager looked up from her paperwork, her posture straightening as she recognized the man standing in front of her.
He carried a thick manila folder in his hands and set it down atop the wooden checkout desk. The manager looked at the papers and asked if he was truly the owner of the entire commercial property.
The man confirmed his ownership, looking directly at the manager while pointing toward the legal documents. He stated that he had returned to renew the shop’s building lease, but on one clear condition.
He gestured toward Olivia, who stood behind the flower buckets with her apron tied around her waist. He explained that the renewal would only take place if Olivia remained on staff at the store.
The young florist asked why he was making that specific demand for her job. The man looked at her with a gentle nod, explaining that she had given his wife the goodbye she truly deserved while the manager watched quietly from the side.
