Bank Manager Challenges Modest Customer Who Requests A Massive Cash Withdrawal

  • 3 min read

A Simple Request at the Counter

An elderly woman in a beige coat placed her hands on the bank counter and slid a slip of paper forward. She spoke in a calm, clear voice, asking the teller for a withdrawal of two hundred thousand dollars.

The teller’s eyes widened immediately as she looked up from her computer screen. Before she could type into her terminal, a man in a dark suit and red tie strode up beside the counter.

He planted his hands on the marble divider and leaned over toward the woman. His brow furrowed as he raised his voice, demanding to know what she had just said.

He asked if she truly expected them to hand over two hundred thousand dollars in cash right there. The woman kept her hands resting quietly on the counter, keeping her gaze level.

A Confrontation in the Lobby

Other customers in the queue turned their heads to watch the exchange. A line of patrons stood behind the partition, watching the man point his index finger directly at the woman’s face.

He told her that this was a bank and not a fantasy, asking if she even understood how much money she had requested. He stepped closer, gesturing with an open palm toward the entrance and asking where someone like her could obtain such funds.

The woman replied that she had asked for exactly what she needed. The manager raised his voice again, demanding proof before he would allow any service to proceed.

The teller tapped the edge of a folder on her desk and leaned toward her microphone. She suggested quietly that they should check the account records first.

The manager turned his head sharply and snapped that he knew how to do his job. He kept his attention locked on the customer, folding his arms tightly across his chest.

The Screen Reveals the Numbers

The teller pressed several keys on her black keyboard, bringing up the customer lookup screen. Her fingers clicked rapidly across the number pad as the blue interface loaded the account data.

Her jaw dropped open as the account details filled the screen. She blinked rapidly, leaning closer to the monitor with parted lips.

The manager turned toward her and asked what she was looking at. The teller kept her eyes fixed on the display and stated that he needed to see the figures for himself.

He demanded that she simply read out the balance aloud. The teller turned the monitor slightly, looked directly at him, and stated that the customer’s available balance exceeded eighty-seven million dollars.

The manager’s mouth fell open, his eyes widening as the color drained from his cheeks. He took a half-step backward, his hands dropping to his sides.

Processing the Transaction

The woman shifted her weight, looking up at the manager as the lobby went completely quiet. She pointed out that he had laughed and questioned her before checking the account files.

She told him that he had judged her by her coat instead of her balance. She instructed him to step aside and process her requested withdrawal immediately.

The manager stood motionless with his chin lowered toward his collar, unable to speak. Behind the desk, the teller quickly lowered her eyes, placed both hands on the keyboard, and began typing rapidly while the line of employees watched in total stillness.
