An Elderly Stranger Approaches A Homeless Man On The Sidewalk Next Day

  • 4 min read

Shared Space On A Park Bench

A smudge of dirt ran down the side of the man’s jaw as he lifted the lid of the metal container.

Inside rested a single sandwich on white bread and a small red apple wrapped neatly in brown parchment paper.

He sat quietly on the weathered wooden slats of a park bench, his faded grey hooded sweatshirt frayed at the cuffs and marked with dark grease stains.

Beside him, an older man sat with his hands resting in his lap, wearing a heavy dark navy jacket buttoned up to his chin.

The older man turned his head slowly, his deep facial lines casting slight shadows across his cheeks under the afternoon sun.

He glanced down at the food inside the metal box, his shoulders dipping slightly as he cleared his throat to speak.

With a quiet voice, he admitted that he had not eaten anything at all that day.

A Moment On The Bench

The younger man looked down at the sandwich resting in the metal tray.

His dirty fingers tapped gently against the rim of the box before sliding underneath the edge of the brown parchment paper.

He paused, his chest rising and falling in a deep exhale as he stared down at the small meal.

Instead of taking a bite, he folded the brown paper back over the top of the bread.

He placed the metal lid back onto the box, sealing it shut with a quiet metallic click.

Extending both arms forward, he pushed the container across the short distance between them into the older man’s reach.

The older man pulled his chin back slightly, his eyes widening as he looked down at the tin container sitting against his palms.

He asked what the younger man would eat if he gave away his only food.

The younger man offered a brief nod, pushing off his knees to stand up from the bench.

He told him he would be fine, turning to walk down the tree-lined park path without waiting for another word.

The Sidewalk Meeting

The next day, the younger man moved along a busy city sidewalk, his shoes dragging slightly against the pavement.

Cars moved past on the adjacent street, their tires humming against the asphalt as pedestrians walked past storefront windows.

He kept his gaze lowered toward the ground, his shoulders slightly hunched against the breeze.

Suddenly, a figure stepped into his path near the edge of a brick building.

The younger man halted, lifting his head to find the same older man standing directly in front of him on the concrete walk.

The older man spoke clear words, reminding him of how he had given away his only lunch the previous day.

Reaching inside the inner lining of his coat, the older man withdrew a crisp, folded sheet of white paper.

Unfolding The Document

He extended his hand, pressing the white document toward the younger man’s chest.

The younger man pulled his hands from his pockets, his dirt-stained fingers taking hold of the edges of the sheet.

He carefully separated the fold, holding the paper open in front of his face under the sunlight.

His eyes tracked across the black printed text line by line, his mouth opening slightly as he read.

A slight grin broke across his stubbled face, his eyes remaining fixed on the white page.

The older man stood beside him on the sidewalk, his hands resting loose at his sides as the younger man continued reading the paper.
