Car Salesmen Question An Elderly Woman Entering Their Showroom Floor

  • 3 min read

An Unnoticed Visitor

An elderly woman rested her fingertips against the hood of a polished silver SUV in the center of the showroom.

Her grey hair was neatly swept back into a soft bun. She wore a dark cardigan over a pale blouse, carrying a small purse tucked under her arm as she walked along the tiled floor.

She paused beside the vehicle and ran her hand lightly across the chrome trim. Her lips moved quietly as she spoke aloud to herself, expressing her intention to purchase the vehicle for her son.

Across the floor, two salesmen stood near a glass partition. One held a digital tablet against his ribs, while the other adjusted his tie with an expressionless gaze.

Neither man moved forward to offer a greeting. Instead, they exchanged a brief look and remained where they were, watching her from across the room.

A Question Of Value

The woman turned toward the men and stepped across the showroom floor. Her posture was erect, though her footing remained deliberate and slow.

She paused a few feet in front of them, resting both hands over her purse. She told them she wanted to buy the silver SUV standing near the entrance for her son.

The taller salesman in the white shirt shifted his balance from one foot to the other. His brow furrowed as he tilted his head downward toward her.

He asked her directly if she was certain she could afford a vehicle of that price point.

The woman’s chin quivered slightly. Her eyes narrowed as she looked up at him, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag.

A Dismissive Suggestion

The salesman raised one arm and pointed a single finger toward a different area of the building near the rear service bay.

He suggested that she direct her attention toward the less expensive inventory parked outside on the lower lot.

The woman took a breath and held her position. She repeated that her sole purpose for entering the dealership was to buy a car for her son.

A tear rolled down her cheek, tracking along the lines near her eye. She reached up with one gloved finger and brushed the moisture away before it reached her jaw.

Behind the first salesman, a second staff member folded his arms across his chest. He lowered his head and told her to stop wasting their time on the floor.

Standing Her Ground

The woman blinked rapidly, her head shaking in short, tight motions as she faced both men.

She raised her hands slightly, palms facing outward toward them. She stated firmly that she was not wasting anyone’s time in the building.

More tears leaked down both sides of her face, catching the bright overhead fluorescent light of the showroom floor.

She stood unmoving between the two standing salesmen, her hands remaining clasped tightly at her waist as she looked directly into the lead salesman’s eyes.
