A Sudden Drop in the Lobby
A black designer handbag slipped off a woman’s arm and thudded onto the marble floor.
She kept walking toward the lobby exit, unaware that her bag was lying behind her.
A young security guard stepped forward and picked the heavy leather tote off the floor.
He quickened his pace across the lobby to catch up to her.
“Excuse me,” he said, holding out the bag. “I think you dropped your bag.”
The woman stopped and looked down at her hands in surprise.
An Unseen Test of Character
She unzipped the main compartment and pulled back the inner lining.
Inside sat thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills alongside credit cards and a smartphone.
Her eyes widened as she looked between the money and the young guard standing calmly in front of her.
“You didn’t take anything?” she asked, her voice tight.
The security guard shook his head, his hands resting at his sides.
She opened the bag wider, showing him the dense stacks of currency packed inside.
“Do you know how much money is in here?” she asked.
“Yes, ma’am,” he replied.
“And you still returned it?” she asked.
The guard looked directly at her.
“My mom always told me that being poor isn’t something to be ashamed of,” he said. “Being dishonest is.”
The woman paused before asking about his role and length of employment at the property.
He explained that he had worked night security there for three years.
She thanked him by name and walked toward the exit doors without another word.
An Unexpected Invitation
The following morning, Daniel sat at home buttoning up his blue jacket.
His smartphone buzzed against the kitchen counter.
He picked it up and held it to his ear.
The caller invited him to an interview at a high-rise corporate building across town at ten o’clock.
Daniel arrived at the glass skyscraper shortly before the appointed time.
The receptionist behind the desk informed him that Miss Hayes was waiting for him.
He stepped through a pair of doors into a large corner office overlooking the city skyline.
The woman from the lobby turned around from behind her desk.
Daniel stopped in his tracks, his eyes opening wide.
“The bag was part of a test,” Miss Hayes said, looking him in the eye.
“You were testing me?” Daniel asked, taking a half-step back.
“I needed to know if I could trust you,” she explained.
A New Path Forward
She slid a thick paper folder across the desk toward him.
He picked up the document and scanned the top line, which offered him the position of Operations Manager.
“But I don’t have a college degree,” Daniel said, looking up from the contract.
Miss Hayes looked at him quietly.
“A degree can teach you skills,” she said. “Honesty, character, and integrity are much harder to teach.”
Five years passed as Daniel fulfilled his corporate role.
He walked down the glass-lined office corridor dressed in a dark suit with a briefcase in hand.
He entered the corner office where Miss Hayes stood looking out over the city during sunset.
She turned toward him and asked if he remembered the handbag from five years earlier.
Daniel smiled and nodded, standing beside her as warm evening sunlight filled the room.
They stood side by side facing the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city skyline reflect the setting sun.
