A Quiet Wednesday Ritual
Grace tipped her metal watering can forward, sending a stream of water directly into the dry dirt of an empty terracotta pot.
She set the can down on the sidewalk, adjusted her cardigan, and turned back toward her front door.
A young boy walking down the pavement slowed his steps and stopped in front of the container.
He looked at the wet soil, then turned up toward the woman.
“Why do you water an empty pot?” he asked, pointing down at the rim.
Grace looked at him and answered, “Because someone might come back.”
An Unexpected Sprout
Seven days later, the boy walked down the same sidewalk and paused beside the step.
A small green sprout with two bright leaves stood upright in the center of the dark earth.
His eyes widened as he leaned down to inspect the stem.
“You planted something?” he asked as Grace stepped out of the house.
Grace tilted her head down toward the soil and shook her head.
“I didn’t,” she said, looking closer at the pot.
The Note in the Soil
The boy reached his hand into the rim of the pot and pulled out a folded white note tucked into the dirt.
He handed the paper to Grace, who unfolded it with both hands.
She held the sheet up and read the words written inside.
“My daughter planted the first seed,” Grace read softly. “She never saw it grow.”
Caring for the Plant
Grace rested her hands gently on the sides of the clay pot, looking down at the small stem.
The boy stood close beside her, watching the green leaves catch the morning light.
Grace smiled softly, keeping her eyes fixed on the small sprout resting inside the clay pot.
