Elderly Man In Diner Booth Refuses To Move For Stranger

  • 2 min read

A Sudden Confrontation at the Booth

A man in a tan overcoat stepped through the diner aisle and stopped beside a corner booth.

An elderly man sat alone at the table, his hands resting near a white ceramic mug of coffee.

The younger man leaned down, staring directly at the table before asking if the seat was finished.

The older man tilted his head upward, speaking softly to explain that he was waiting for an arrival.

A gold wristwatch flashed as the younger man slammed his open palm flat against the tabletop.

He raised his voice across the room, demanding that the older man relocate immediately.

The elderly man pointed toward several empty red vinyl booths across the walkway, but the younger man stepped closer.

The Spilled Mug

The man in the suit reached out and knocked the ceramic mug sideways across the laminate surface.

Dark brown liquid flooded the table, spreading in wide rings toward the edge.

The older man looked down at the puddle, his shoulders lowering slightly into the seat.

A single tear formed along the edge of his eyelid as he sat motionless in the booth.

The younger man straightened his lapels, standing tall above the damp surface.

Instead of standing up, the older man reached slowly inside his green jacket pocket.

He pulled out folded paper sheets and laid them directly onto the table, pressing them into the spilled coffee.

A Document on the Wet Table

The older man pointed a steady finger toward the top line of the damp page.

He instructed the standing man to read the name printed across the header.

The younger man leaned down, narrowing his eyes as he traced the ink across the wet paper.

His mouth opened slightly as the text registered.

He asked if the older man held ownership over the entire building.

The elderly man replied that the diner rented its space directly from him every month.

He added that he had arrived at the diner specifically for their scheduled commercial lease meeting.

Taking a Seat

The younger man let his arms fall to his sides as his posture slumped forward.

The older man motioned toward the seat across from him, noting they now had more matters to settle.

The younger man reached out, pulled back the opposite seat, and sat down quietly.

Both men sat facing each other across the stained table, the coffee puddle spreading around the white mug.
