Farmer Steps In When Young Foal Becomes Trapped In Fence

  • 3 min read

Caught in the Wire

The young palomino foal thrust his front legs through the bottom squares of the wire fence, pitching his chest forward over the steel grid. His small hooves dug into the damp grass as he pulled against the tension of the wire.

Behind him, a tall bay mare stood inches away, lowering her head to watch the struggle. The foal opened his mouth wide and let out a high-pitched cry into the morning mist.

His hind legs remained firmly on the pasture side, but his front half leaned over the outer edge. Every time he attempted to pull backward, the square wire mesh tightened around his slender knees.

Hands on the Steel

A farmer wearing a tan work jacket, leather gloves, and a brown cap knelt directly into the wet clover beside the trapped foal.

She placed her left gloved hand firmly around the foal’s slender front leg. With her right hand, she gripped the stiff bottom wire and pulled downward to widen the opening.

The foal cried out again, his pink tongue visible as his head jerked upward against the cold air. The mare took a slow step forward, keeping her eyes fixed on the hands working at her baby’s feet.

The rescuer leaned her weight back onto her knees. She held the foal’s left ankle, sliding the hoof backward through the steel mesh millimeter by millimeter.

Working the Final Leg Free

Mud clung to the foal’s lower legs and hooves as the first foot popped clear of the fence. But the second leg remained hooked behind the horizontal wire strand.

The woman shifted her grip, pressing down on the flexible fencing with both gloved thumbs. She kept her voice low and steady, repeating quiet words as she worked the second hoof through the opening.

With a firm backward guide, the remaining hoof slipped over the steel wire and dropped cleanly onto the grass. The wire mesh snapped back into place with a dull metallic click.

The foal stood upright on all four wobbly legs, shaking his reddish mane in the cool fog. He paused for three seconds, balancing on the damp green clover beside the fence line.

Rejoining the Herd

The young horse turned his body away from the wire barrier and trotted toward the open pasture. His long, thin legs carried him across the grass toward the waiting mare.

The bay mother lowered her dark muzzle to meet the foal’s white-blazed face, gently nudging his neck. Together, the mother and foal turned in unison and walked away across the green field toward the white wooden fence in the dense morning fog.
