Wandering Pregnant Dog Approaches A Firefighter On A Busy Sidewalk

  • 3 min read

Reaching Out on a Busy Sidewalk

The golden retriever lifted her right paw and pressed it against the passerby’s knee on the sidewalk.

The man glanced down, tucked his paper lunch bag tight against his side, and shook his head before walking past.

She moved along the row of outdoor cafe tables, resting her chin on the wooden edge of a patron’s table.

A waitress stepped through the doorway with her palms out, guiding the dog back toward the open sidewalk.

Every person seated on benches or carrying takeout gave a quick apology and turned their shoulders away.

Her belly sagged heavily beneath her ribcage, swaying with every slow step along the concrete curb.

A Red Truck Pulls to the Curb

The heavy tires of a fire engine came to a halt beside the crosswalk with a hiss of air brakes.

A firefighter stepped down from the cab in his full turnout gear, helmet secured and radio clipped to his chest.

The retriever walked straight toward his heavy boots, lifting her paw once again to meet his gloved hand.

He dropped to one knee on the pavement, resting a bare hand against her rounded side.

The dog lowered her body onto the sidewalk, resting her chin flat against the ground while looking directly into his eyes.

He stood, walked her toward the side compartment of the engine, and lifted her gently into a cushioned compartment before radioing ahead to an emergency veterinary clinic.

The Monitor in the Exam Room

At the clinic, the veterinarian pressed an ultrasound wand over the dog’s swollen abdomen, sliding the gel-coated scanner across her fur.

The screen flickered with movement, showing tiny curved spines and five rapid, rhythmic heartbeats pulsing inside the monitor display.

Within hours on a blanketed examination table, five golden puppies were born, nuzzling against their mother’s side as she cleaned each one with slow sweeps of her tongue.

The firefighter knelt beside the bed, brushing his thumb across the worn metal tag hanging from her red collar.

The surface was scuffed with dirt, but the engraved letters ‘LUNA’ remained visible above a faded string of phone numbers.

The veterinarian typed the name into a local lost-pet database, pulling up an old registry file from eight months earlier that featured a photograph of the same dog sitting beside an elderly woman in a blue cardigan.

An Inscription on a Scratched Tag

A phone call brought the elderly woman rushing through the glass clinic doors, her coat unbuttoned and her hands trembling at her sides.

Luna lifted her head from the mat, stood up, and took three quick steps toward the woman before pressing her face deep into her shoulder.

The woman dropped to both knees on the linoleum floor, wrapping both arms around the retriever’s neck with tears running down her cheeks.

The veterinarian gently scooped up two of the sleeping puppies and placed them into the woman’s lap beside the mother.

The owner turned the silver disc on Luna’s collar between her thumb and forefinger to reveal the reverse side, engraved with the words ‘ALWAYS FIND YOUR WAY HOME.’
