Why This Driver Stops Every Morning Just To Rearrange Office Furniture

  • 3 min read

A Quiet Morning Routine

Ethan turned the steering wheel of his black sedan, pulling off the main city street into a quiet parking lot. He switched off the ignition and stepped out onto the asphalt.

Every morning, his drive to work took twenty extra minutes because of this specific detour. He walked up the concrete path toward the front entrance of the community building.

He pushed open the heavy glass double doors and stepped into the tiled lobby. Without looking around or speaking, he walked directly toward a wooden chair sitting near the front desk.

He took hold of the wooden backrest with both hands and lifted the chair slightly off the floor. He carried it several feet across the room and set it down right next to the entrance door.

An Unexplained Habit

The woman working behind the reception counter watched his movements closely. She rested her hands on her desk as she tracked him walking back toward the doorway.

Ethan did not pause to offer an explanation or ask any questions. He pushed the glass door open, stepped outside into the morning air, and headed straight back toward his vehicle.

Day after day, the woman observed the same sequence unfold at the exact same hour. Each morning, Ethan entered, repositioned the chair beside the entrance, and left immediately.

Curiosity finally prompted her to follow him out toward the doorway. As he pushed open the entrance, she called after him to ask why he kept moving the chair every morning.

Making Space For Others

Ethan stopped in his tracks near the threshold and looked back over his shoulder. He glanced at the wooden chair resting right beside the glass doors.

He mentioned that someone entering the facility might need a place to sit down immediately upon arriving. He then turned back toward his car and walked across the parking lot.

Shortly afterward, a visitor entered through the front doors carrying a heavy coat. The man sat down directly onto the wooden chair Ethan had positioned near the entrance.

The receptionist watched the man rest his head back against the wall. The placement of the chair allowed him to rest without having to walk further into the facility.

A Simple Reason

The receptionist walked out the front doors and crossed the pavement toward Ethan’s parked car. He stood near the driver’s side door, key in hand, preparing to leave.

She stopped near the hood of his sedan and asked why he spent time doing this every single day. Ethan looked at her calmly before giving his answer.

He explained that years earlier, someone had made room for him when he needed a place to sit. He adjusted his jacket, opened his car door, and climbed inside.

Ethan turned the key in the ignition, pulled out of the parking space, and drove toward the main road as the receptionist stood watching on the sidewalk.
