A Leap Through The Window
The German shepherd planted his front paws firmly against the glass sill of the moving SUV, his ears pinned forward toward the white cargo van ahead.
His handler kept both hands on the steering wheel, glancing sideways as the dog let out a sharp, urgent bark.
The white van pulled over onto the dirt shoulder and cut its engine.
Before the SUV fully stopped, the shepherd pushed his body through the open passenger window and hit the ground running.
He sprinted across the gravel, heading straight for the driver’s side of the idling van.
The Chase Through The Pines
The dog leaped upward, thrusting his snout through the van’s lowered window frame.
His teeth clamped down on the key ring dangling inside the cab, yanking the entire set free from the ignition.
He spun around with the metal jingling between his jaws and bolted up the wooded embankment.
The van driver shoved his door open and stumbled into the dirt, shouting as he ran after the dog.
The dog’s owner followed close behind, his boots kicking up dry pine needles as he closed the distance.
“Stop! Leave him alone!” the SUV owner called out, stepping between the angry stranger and his dog.
The shepherd stopped on the pine needle crest, looking down toward the vehicle with the silver keys still secure in his mouth.
Unlocking The Cargo Doors
The dog trotted back down the hill and approached the rear bumper of the white van.
He placed his paws against the rear doors, scratching at the white metal panels before dropping the keys onto the ground.
His owner knelt in the dry brush, scooped the key ring from the dirt, and inserted the brass key into the rear latch.
He twisted the mechanism and swung both doors open into the sunlight.
Inside the enclosed cargo space, rows of plastic crates sat stacked from floor to ceiling.
Six golden retrievers and small mixed-breed dogs stared out through the metal wire grates, whining quietly as fresh air swept inside.
The van driver backed away toward the edge of the roadway and dropped his head, lowering himself onto the dirt slope.
The man knelt down beside his sitting shepherd, pulled a mobile phone from his jacket pocket, and pressed it to his ear to dial dispatch.
