Curious Kitten Slips Into Deep Water Well Behind The Shed

  • 3 min read

A Sudden Slip Over The Stone Ledge

The small grey kitten reached out a single paw along the rough masonry of the garden well, stretching toward an insect crawling across the mortar. Her back paws lost their grip on the damp stone, sending her tumbling down into the dark shaft below.

A soft splash echoed up from the bottom of the pit as the kitten hit the chilly water. She paddled frantically, her tiny claws scratching against the slick stones before finding a narrow rock ledge just above the waterline.

Across the yard, Max the golden retriever paused mid-stride in the green grass. His ears perked forward, and his head tilted toward the stone structure standing beneath the wooden roof.

Searching The Yard For A Way Down

Max trotted directly to the base of the well, planting both front paws firmly against the outer stones. He lowered his snout over the dark rim, his nostrils flaring as high-pitched cries rose up from the shadows beneath him.

The dog stepped down from the stone wall and circled the structure twice, pacing with quick, focused steps. He turned his gaze toward the wooden storage shed standing at the edge of the lawn.

Max trotted straight to the shed door, where a thick coiled work rope lay resting on the grass. He clamped his jaws securely around the middle of the rough hemp cord and lifted it off the lawn.

Holding the heavy rope in his mouth, the golden retriever marched back across the yard toward the well. He planted his paws at the stone rim once more and lowered his head, dropping the frayed end of the line straight down into the darkness.

Reaching Down Into The Dark Shaft

The rope swung gently inside the shaft, brushing directly past the stone ledge where the shivering kitten clung. The small tabby looked up, opened her mouth wide in a meow, and wrapped both front legs tightly around the descending cord.

Max anchored his weight against the ground, gripping his end of the line firmly. He guided the rope against the stone ledge, creating tension so the kitten could use her claws to gain purchase along the rough fibers.

The dog leaned his chest far over the stone lip of the well, keeping his eyes locked onto the small shape ascending through the gloom. As the kitten’s head appeared near the surface, Max reached his broad front paw downward, offering a solid surface for the climber to grasp.

The kitten dug her claws into the dog’s thick golden fur, scrambling over the top lip of the stone ring. She tumbled onto the flat top of the wall, wet fur flattened against her tiny ribs.

Side By Side Across The Sunny Yard

Max immediately backed off the wall and hopped down into the grass, standing beside the soaking kitten. He lowered his head and nudged her flanks with his warm nose, checking every inch of her damp coat.

The kitten shook the moisture from her ears and took three wobbly steps across the lawn. She pressed her side against the retriever’s front leg, rubbing her cheek against his golden fur as her tail curled upward.

Max gave one gentle swipe of his tongue across the top of her head before turning toward the open lawn. The kitten trotted alongside his flank, matching his steady stride as both animals walked together across the sunlit grass toward the shade of the back fence.
