A Hungry Calf Follows A Delivery Truck Searching For Its Mother

  • 3 min read

A Tiny Runner on the Asphalt

Four tiny hooves struck the pavement in rapid succession, kicking up small clouds of dust behind the rear bumper of a moving cargo truck.

A snow-white calf galloped down the center of the road, keeping its wide eyes locked onto the large illustration of a dairy cow printed across the vehicle’s rear doors.

The truck rolled steadily forward along the rural asphalt, its metal frame vibrating as the calf matched its pace, refusing to drop back.

With every rotation of the heavy tires, the young animal stretched its neck forward, tilting its ears up toward the towering portrait of the black-and-white cow.

Following the Moving Picture

The vehicle eventually slowed as the open countryside gave way to crowded city streets filled with parked sedans, crosswalks, and walking pedestrians.

The truck pulled alongside the curb and cut its engine outside a row of storefronts.

The small calf stopped just inches from the rear bumper, extending its pink nose to sniff the flat, painted metal surface of the tailgate.

It blinked slowly, tilting its head sideways while watching the painted eyes of the cow staring back under the afternoon light.

A few drops of moisture dripped from the calf’s chin as it shifted its weight from hoof to hoof on the hard concrete.

Unlocking the Rear Cargo

The driver stepped out from the cab, pulled on the hem of his olive jacket, and walked around to the back of the cargo container.

He reached up, grabbed the heavy metal latch, and swung the double doors outward toward the sidewalk.

Inside the dark cargo bay sat rows of polished stainless steel milk jugs, filled to the brim with fresh white liquid.

The driver gripped the side handles of a heavy canister, hoisted it down onto the pavement, and carried it straight into a roadside tea shop.

The calf stepped closer to the line of metal cans, twitching its ears as people moved back and forth carrying containers across the dusty ground.

A Fresh Bowl on the Sidewalk

Inside the open stall, a shopkeeper in a cloth apron turned toward the large metal container resting beside his wooden counter.

He dipped a deep metal ladle into the fresh milk, lifting it out full and tilting it smoothly into an enamel bowl.

The man walked outside, crouched down on one knee by the stone step, and set the brimming white bowl directly in front of the little calf.

The calf dipped its pink muzzle straight into the bowl, drinking long gulps as white droplets splashed across its nose and chin.
