Can A Casual Outfit Stop A Buyer From Getting Private Jet Service

  • 3 min read

An Unexpected Visitor in the Hangar

The young sales executive smoothed the front of his tailored suit jacket as he walked across the polished concrete floor of the private aircraft hangar. Large glass walls looked out over the airfield where a sleek private jet sat resting in the afternoon sun.

An older man stood near the glass enclosure, dressed in a casual beige sweater cardigan over a white shirt, holding a dark leather binder beneath his arm. The executive stepped directly into his path with a raised palm.

He informed the visitor that the showroom catered exclusively to private aircraft buyers. He suggested the man head toward the commercial terminal on the far side of the airfield if he needed flight tickets.

A Question of Budget

The visitor did not shift his stance or alter his grip on his binder. He replied quietly that he was not looking for a ticket, but intended to buy a plane.

The executive smiled briefly, gesturing toward the white twin-engine jet resting behind them. He pointed out that the aircraft was valued at nearly twenty million dollars.

He stepped closer, suggesting the man was looking at options well beyond his financial reach. The older man kept his face neutral and reminded the salesman that he had never asked what his budget was.

The executive shook his head, explaining that no viewing could be arranged without prior financial verification. The visitor opened his binder, extracted a card, and asked the salesman to call his manager to state that Richard Cole was present.

The Phone Call That Changed Everything

The salesman retrieved his mobile phone with a dismissive gesture and dialed a number. He told his manager that a walk-in named Mr. Cole was standing in the hangar inquiring about the primary luxury aircraft.

Walking along a glass corridor nearby, the manager stopped mid-stride upon hearing the name. His eyes widened, and he pressed the phone firmly against his ear as he demanded immediate confirmation.

Once the salesman repeated the name, the manager ordered him not to say another word before disconnecting and running down the concourse toward the showroom floor.

An Unforgettable Lesson in Civility

Seconds later, the manager rushed into the hangar, crossing the floor rapidly toward the older visitor. He offered an immediate verbal apology, explaining that no one expected a personal visit from the founder of Cole Aviation, the parent company that owned the entire showroom fleet.

The young salesman lowered his phone, his jaw loosening as his eyes widened in shock. He stumbled over his speech, asking if the visitor owned the jet, to which the man replied that he owned the company selling it.

The salesman clasped his hands together near his waist, asking for another chance to keep his position. The owner looked at him quietly, stating he would not be fired, but reassigned to the basic customer service desk starting the next morning so he could greet all standard guests first.

Richard Cole then turned away, gripping his leather folder beneath his arm, and climbed the carpeted stairs into the private jet while the executive remained still on the hangar floor.
