Why Does This Elderly Man Sit In His Car Every Morning?

  • 3 min read

A Daily Routine in the Parking Lot

A dark sedan pulled slowly into the parking lot at seven in the morning, stopping in the exact same spot near the store front.

Inside the car, an elderly man in a dark cardigan adjusted his sleeves and glanced at his wristwatch. He reached down and rested his hands on a worn brown leather lunchbox sitting on the passenger seat.

Inside the grocery store, a young cashier wearing a green polo shirt stood by the glass sliding doors, watching the car from her post.

For an entire week, she watched the vehicle park at seven on the dot, but the driver never stepped out to shop.

A Question After Seven Days

She walked out through the automatic doors and approached the driver-side window.

She leaned down toward the glass, her hands resting near her sides, and asked if he was alright.

The man turned his head slowly toward her, his grip still resting firm on the vintage leather briefcase on his lap.

He told her that his wife used to meet him in this parking lot every single morning before starting her morning shift at work.

He looked down toward his hands and added that she had passed away three years ago.

Opening the Leather Box

The cashier stood quietly beside the car door, her hands folded gently in front of her green apron.

The elderly man reached down and unlatched the metal clasp on top of the brown lunchbox.

He lifted the lid to reveal a carefully packed meal: a fresh sandwich wrapped in paper, a brown bag, and a red apple sitting in the corner.

Instead of taking a bite, he lifted the wrapped sandwich out of the box with both hands.

He reached for the door handle, pushed the heavy car door open, and swung his feet out onto the asphalt.

A Hidden Purpose

The cashier took a step back to give him room as he stood up from the driver’s seat.

He carried the container across the quiet parking lot toward another man standing near the building corner wearing a distressed brown jacket.

The elderly man extended the food forward with both hands, holding it out until the other man reached out to accept it.

The man in the jacket looked down at the freshly prepared sandwich, his shoulders easing as he held the container tight against his chest.

Behind them, the cashier stood in front of her store, watching quietly as the elderly man turned back toward his car door.
