Caught in the Wire
The baby raccoon’s small snout wedged tight against the hexagonal wire mesh as its front paws clawed at the green grass.
Its tiny claws gripped the twisted metal strands, pulling backward against the tension, but the narrow opening held its skull firmly in place.
A few yards back along the fence line, an adult raccoon paced in tight circles, darting its head back and forth while keeping its dark eyes fixed on the struggling kit.
Heavy boots crunched against the turf as a man walked into frame, wearing thick tan leather work gloves.
He dropped to one knee on the damp grass, bringing his shoulders level with the trapped animal.
A Gentle Hand
“Hey, hey, hey, easy little one,” the man murmured, lowering his gloved hands over the kit’s trembling back.
The adult raccoon retreated a few paces into the background, pausing behind the wire line to look back toward the kneeling man.
The baby squirmed, burying its nose deeper into the wire aperture while kicking its hind legs into the sod.
The man slid his fingers beneath the kit’s belly, supporting its chest to take the weight off its constricted neck.
With his other hand, he pressed his thumb against the rigid wire braid, pushing the metal loop outward to create a fraction of an inch of slack.
He worked slowly, adjusting his grip every couple of seconds to ensure the wire edges did not scrape the kit’s sensitive muzzle or ears.
Working the Angle
The man rotated the baby raccoon’s head slightly to align the widest part of its skull with the widest gap in the mesh.
His heavy leather glove shielded the animal from sharp metal points while applying steady backward traction.
The kit gave a brief wriggle, its black mask pressed against the man’s leather palm as the metal strand finally slid over its furry cheek.
With one final, deliberate tug, the man eased the raccoon’s ears through the opening.
The kit slipped entirely free from the fence, its front paws touching the open lawn.
A Quick Look Back
The man withdrew his hands and rested his knuckles on the grass, giving the small creature room to move.
Instead of bolting immediately, the young raccoon sat back on its haunches in the lush clover, turning its head to look directly up into the man’s face.
Its dark, glassy eyes blinked once in the late afternoon sun, whiskers twitching against the evening breeze.
It spun around on all fours, kicked up bits of freshly cut lawn, and sprinted straight toward the fence line where the mother was waiting.
The baby scrambled across the trimmed lawn on all fours, its ringed tail bobbing until it slipped under the wire toward the older raccoon waiting in the tall grass.
