Trapped Against The Wire
A round, bristling porcupine pushed its snout through the lowest square of a woven wire fence, pinning its barbed quills against the metal strands.
Its dark hind legs kicked against the hard-packed snow, but every forward lunge only drove its sharp spine coat deeper into the narrow opening.
A few yards ahead along the fence line, a second porcupine stood on the snowy shoulder, glancing back over its shoulder before slowly shuffling forward.
The trapped animal remained firmly wedged at mid-body, its quills flaring outward as its breath puffed white against the winter air.
A Careful Approach
A pair of worn leather work boots crunched into the snow beside the fence.
The man dropped down onto one knee, resting his hand on his denim-covered thigh as he assessed how tightly the quills gripped the wire mesh.
Wearing thick cowhide work gloves, he leaned over the fence rail and whispered a soft greeting to keep the animal from thrashing.
The porcupine tucked its nose tight against the snow, its body bristling in defense while the man positioned both gloved hands around its frame.
He placed his right palm firmly behind the neck quills and guided his left fingers underneath the wire strand to support the lower belly.
Working The Quills Free
Instead of pulling forward, which would force the outward-facing barbs against the metal, the man pushed backward with steady, measured pressure.
The stiff quills clicked and scraped against the galvanized wire as the man gently worked the animal’s sides loose, one millimeter at a time.
He repositioned his thumbs against the lower horizontal wire, spreading the narrow gap just wide enough to relieve the pinch on the porcupine’s flank.
The animal gave a quick shuffle of its back legs, feeling the tension ease across its spine.
With one final, controlled nudge from the gloved hands, the porcupine slid completely out of the wire square and landed softly on all four paws in the snow.
Rejoining The Trail
The man pulled his hands back and rested his palms on his knees, remaining motionless so as not to startle the freed animal.
The porcupine shook its thick coat, sending a loose spray of snow into the air, and turned its head toward the road.
It paused for a brief second beside the man’s boot, twitching its dark nose in the cold air.
Then it trotted briskly down the snowy path along the fence, its rounded rear swaying as it caught up with its companion near the trees.
