A Dark Net in the Foaming Surf
Frothy white wash swept over the dark green shell as thick, knotted nylon cords pinned both front flippers flat against the wet sand.
The sea turtle lifted its head toward the sky, drawing in air as water surged across its back and receded down the sloping shoreline.
Heavy mesh tangled tightly around the reptile’s neck and shell, digging into its scales every time it tried to crawl forward.
A young boy in a blue shirt walked along the waterline and stopped in his tracks, pointing directly at the bundle of twine rolling in the tide.
He dropped to his knees in the damp sand beside the creature, placing one hand gently near the rear edge of its carapace.
The turtle blinked against the salt spray, remaining pinned under the weight of the waterlogged fishing gear.
Dialing the Rescue Line
The boy pressed his fingertips against the plastic netting, tracing where the fibers bound the animal’s limbs to its body.
He pulled a mobile phone from his pocket, pressed it firmly against his ear, and began speaking while keeping his eyes fixed on the trapped reptile.
With his free hand, he rested a finger on the turtle’s shell, staying beside it as incoming breakers splashed around his sneakers.
He stood up on the dry sand, lifting one arm high above his head to wave toward the dunes in the distance.
A wildlife officer in a tan uniform and white latex gloves jogged across the sand toward the water’s edge, carrying a cutting blade in his hand.
The officer knelt immediately beside the turtle, assessing the tangled web wrapped around its neck and flippers.
Slicing the Knotted Mesh
The officer slid the sharp edge of the blade under the thickest strand of net resting across the center of the shell.
He pulled the blade upward, parting the taught cords one by one while keeping the sharp steel away from the reptile’s leathery skin.
The boy stood close by with his hands resting at his sides, watching each severed cord fall loose onto the wet sand.
The officer peeled the large green net backward, working it free from the turtle’s shoulders and lifting the tangled bundle away into a pile.
With both flippers finally clear, the officer positioned his gloved hands under the sides of the shell and hoisted the heavy reptile off the sand.
He carried it forward a few feet and gently lowered its belly into the shallow foam of an incoming wave.
A Clean Glide into Open Water
The turtle dug its front flippers into the wet sand, pushing its body forward into the advancing surf.
The boy watched with wide eyes as the reptile picked up speed, gliding through the white foam until the water lifted its weight.
Sunlight reflected off the clear ocean floor as the turtle stroked outward, its flippers sweeping through the turquoise water like wings.
The boy stood at the edge of the tide line, raising his hand to wave as the dark shape moved farther beneath the surface.
