Passing Driver Spots Barking Dog Beside Collapsed Woman On Busy Road

  • 4 min read

An Urgent Call Beside Traffic

The golden retriever threw his head back and let out a sharp, continuous bark directly toward the oncoming lanes of traffic. Behind him, an overturned wheelchair lay on its side along the concrete curb, its wheels spinning in the damp air.

On the ground, an elderly woman lay curled on her side, one hand resting on the wet pavement while the dog nudged her shoulder with his wet nose. Commuter cars sped past just feet away, kicking up road spray against the sidewalk edge.

A silver sedan pulled abruptly onto the shoulder. The driver’s door swung open, and a young man in a bright red sweatshirt stepped out onto the sidewalk.

He dropped to one knee beside the woman, resting his hand gently on her shoulder while the golden retriever leaned against his knee. He quickly pulled his cell phone from his pocket, pressed it to his ear, and spoke into the receiver while keeping his eyes fixed on the woman’s shallow breathing.

The Rush To Trauma One

Within minutes, the flashing lights of an ambulance illuminated the rainy street. Two paramedics lowered the metal ramp at the vehicle’s rear doors and lifted the woman securely onto a wheeled gurney.

The dog followed every movement with his eyes, keeping his paws planted just inches from the stretcher’s wheels. As the paramedics guided the gurney inside, the young man stood close by, keeping one hand resting on the dog’s collar.

Inside the hospital hallway, the gurney rolled rapidly beneath fluorescent ceiling lights past plastic sheeting and trauma bays. The young man jogged beside the medical crew, with the golden retriever trotting right beside his heels through the double doors.

Nurses and technicians immediately gathered around the bed, attaching monitors and reading off vitals through the open trauma room door.

A Vigil Beyond The Glass

Outside the observation window, the young man dropped to the floor against the wall. He pressed his palms together, resting his forehead against his fingertips as doctors worked on the other side of the glass.

The golden retriever sat directly in front of the pane, placing both front paws against the lower sill and staring straight at the hospital bed where monitors blinked with numeric readings.

Hours later, the room fell quiet. The woman sat propped up against a stack of pillows, her color returning as she gripped the young man’s hand from the edge of the mattress.

The retriever rested his front paws directly on the bedsheets, burying his snout into the crook of her neck while she wrapped both arms around his golden fur. On the side table, a fresh vase of yellow flowers stood beside a metal tray holding her dinner.

Returning To Familiar Ground

Days later, the front door of a suburban house opened, and the young man slung his bag over his shoulder. He raised a hand in a wave toward the living room where the woman sat upright in her wheelchair, smiling back at him before he stepped through the entryway.

Out along the sunlit garden path, the woman held up a yellow tennis ball from her chair. The golden retriever sprang forward, leaping lightly onto his hind legs to catch the ball gently between his teeth as the woman laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Later that evening, inside a bedroom lit only by the warm glow of a bedside lamp, the woman lay under a thick floral quilt with her glasses resting on her nose. Tucked firmly beneath her arm, the golden retriever lay with his head pressed against her chest, both of them breathing softly in unison as the night grew quiet.
